Within 6 months it seems we will have a home use dual layer recorder for use. What effects do you think this will have to companies like DVD2One and the such like ? Can there be any other use for a transcoder ? I guess 2 discs on to 1 would be cool when it comes to having 8gb of space.
What price would you guys pay for a dual layer drive ? Would you happily stick to transcoding for your backups until the drive comes down to as cheap as current single layer drives ?
I am looking forward to the day it comes out, I really think it is the next biggest thing in the DVD world since the 1 click transcoder.

I read somewhere, but no longer have a link, that the recordable DVDs are going to be very expensive at the start. So nothing I will be buying in the next year.

how long is Blue-Ray going to be?. I know you can get them now but I'm talking worldwide release
is this 8.4Gb dual layer DVD not just a temporary thing? as I'm pretty sure I'd rather have a 27GB DVD :)

Mackem, although that is true, the dual layers should be compatible with 100 percent of DVD players, unlike Blu-Ray. I am sure Blu-Ray will triumph, but not for 5 years yet probably, way too many millions of normal DVD players out there.

will Blue Ray's play normal DVD's?. I'm not sure but I think they may play one format but I might just be imagining it :)

From what I've read in articles concerning dual layer recordable media, industry has decided Blue-Ray is too new to adopt in any standard, and its too early to ask consumers to switch media formats (i.e. it was only a year or so ago that DVD Player sales outranked VHS Player sales)

Mackem, yes, Blu-Ray is backwards compatible with normal DVDs, but not the other way around of course. Int21h is right in saying it is too soon for another format. Dual Layer DVDs will rule supreme in the mainstream market for at least another 5 to 7 years I think (although I am sure many thousands will own Blu Ray by then, or even Green Ray units). Until HDTV becomes standard there isn't much of a market for such huge capacities in the mainstream, except for people who want to archive many movies on to one disc.

maybe the industry will just try to milk us?
they know if they brought in blue ray now it would soon take over in a few years with higher quality DVD's and also the possible options of having 2 or 3 DVD's on one blue ray disc
I suppose they have an inbetween format with the dual layer so why not make some money out of it (stepping stone)
I'm happy with either splitting or compressing onto a single layer and I will only jump ship onto dual layer when it's cheap enough I guess like I do with most stuff :)

I thought the idea of them using blue lasers was to get a shorter wavelength, smaller track sizes and therefore more capacity. So a "green-ray" laser DVD thingy would be a step backwards towards the current red ?
I can't wait until a few years when we start to have the UV lasers and you have to put on SPF30+ so you don't "burn" along with the DVD's :)
Or working further down (or is that up..) the EM scale to the x-ray DVD burner that comes with lead shielding... ;)
Agree that the high initial dual-layers pricing (drives and discs) will still make the current method viable for the next 18 months - 2 years.
Cheers...

I'm might just wait for a DVD press machine
why don't they just make a DVD the size of a laser disc?
how much info would that hold, 25GB?, that's a 50GB flipper lol :D
the burner could fit to the side of your case vertically
