Check "Rip subtitles" in the Subtitle tab, then, having selected your avi in the conversion tab, click go and select "add external subtitle stream" then browse for the subs file.
Use the preview window to check subs position and alter in the subs tab if necessary and you need to check either permanent, SVCD or CVD subs. If you select permanent the subs are always on. With the other two options you can select subs on/off but not all standalones support this. There are some image files you can download (links in the Q+A) to burn to CD and try in your DVD player to see what types it supports.

Hi, @ufuksan, and welcome to the forum.
Following up Nick's post, AFAIK you can use only one version of AviSynth at a time. I guess that if you installed them in the order you mention, the last one, 2.52 will remain as current. This is good since it has some advantages over the older one.
