Hello All,It's nice to be on board.

This may be a daft question, but Im going to ask it anyway the question being. Can I copy a DVD, that I've just bought for a friend by
putting it into my CD.Rom and then copying it with my C.D.Rewriter. I beleive the DVD in question is a copied one.

Thanks to all who reply,

Megga:D

Thanks,for your quick reply A380,

It's all new and very complicated to me but Im getting the jist of things, very slowly.

The reason in asking the question was I didn't know wether you could or couldn't copy the copied DVD to my hard drive then copy from my hard drive to my C.D.Rewriter.

When you mentioned Dual layered DVD Burners is that what they mean by + and - ?.I do know one thing that there are 8 speed burners out now rather than the normal 4 speed.

Thanks again, A380.

megga:

Welcome to the forum! A format conversion from DVD to SVCD is possible, go to the Guides page where there is an entire section devoted to this topic. http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm

As A380 pointed out, we can only give help on legally obtained discs, so familiarize yourself with the forum rules and be sure that your source falls within these guidelines. There's an Announcement that covers this topic at the top of the Newbies homepage, as well.

He won't be copying anything until he gets a DVD-ROM.

Megga, welcome to Doom9's forum.

We were all Newbies once, and this was all very confusing to us, too. Don't worry. You've come to the right place.

A great place to start for background information is in a section of Doom9's web site called The Basics (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm). If you click on the link here in the thread, or on the link on left hand side of www.doom9.org, you'll see a list of 13 different links organized into 4 sections. The DVD Basics section has guides that describe DVD structure, DVD aspect ratios, pointers to the huge and helpful DVD FAQ, and similar helpful information. The Ripping Basics section includes a Newbie Guide about equipment and software, and a fairly good description of how both analog and digital video work. The Comparisons section compares both tools for getting DVD information off of the disc and onto your PC, as well as comparing different technologies that produce MPEG-4 video for viewing from PCs and a few special set-top players. The Other Stuff section will help you understand some of the legal implications of Fair Use.

Hi

also putting the DVD into a CD-ROM device will not work. You need a DVD-ROM Drive to be able to read that DVD.

By golly, you're right. Sorry, A380.

However, the thread title is about DVD to SVCD, so once you started talking about DVD burners, I kind of skipped over the rest. But it does appear that megga wasn't really sure what he wanted. Maybe jggimi helped out there.

Thank you all very much for your quick and very good response.
A380,Did point out the fact that it was possible to achieve my objective, from DVD To Svcd and I also overlooked this aswell.

I do wish to say sorry if I went towards the boundries of breaking the forum rules in the comments made in my 1st post, but this was down to not knowing and not realising what I had said and is only on a educational to know purpose.

Thankyou all again,

There is alot of reading to be done, and also alot of learning.

But thanks again,
