Authoring MPEG4 discs, is it possible?

Since there are already many brands of MPEG4 capable standalones, I wanted to know if it was possible to author a DVD with MPEG4 streams instead of MPEG2(1) streams.

2 things:
-DVD authoring software will reject video stream as non-compliant.
-Wouldn't the DVD player be expecting the MPEG-4 stream to be in a container like avi?

Matthew, the question implies the existence of software that make such an authoring. As for the expected container, why should that be a problem?
