I was wondering what is the best way to compress/get a dvd movie small enough to be put on a mini dvd 1.47 gig. I have tried different softwares and have been able to compress it down, lower the ratio, but the final movie is choppy and looks bad. Is there a successful way to do this? Thanks.

If you reencode it to half D1 resolution with a good mpeg2 encoder like Mainconcept 1.4, CCE or TMPGEncPlus and make a movie only disc then you should be able to get nice results. If it's a long movie you may need to use VCD resolution. By lowering the reolution the bitrate can be lowered more without causing compression artifacts.

you have to remember that 1.47GB is just like 2 CDs. you're going to have to sacrifice a lot.
i've done successful 2 cd backups in SVCD for ~120 minute movies though... that's at 480x576 resolution. for the video to be DVD compliant it should be 352x576 or 352x480. this wont affect it as badly as you might think, but IMHO sizing down to VCD size (352x288 or 240) is a bit too much...
