can anyone tell me how to take an avi with 5 audio streams, select only 2 of them (english 5.1 and directors commentary) so that i can mux them back with the video to make a dvd? i uses dvd lab, and if i make 2 seperate files using virtualdubmod (one for each audio stream) that i want, i can only associate 1 of them with the video file in the authoring program. thanks y'all!

DVD-Lab is single audio out-of-the-box. You can feed it a ready-made vob including multiple audio and it should leave the audio streams alone, but you probably won't be able to select the secondary audio without modifying the ifo afterwards.
There's more knowledgeable people about this (and I believe, some methods on how to achieve dual audio) in the DVD authoring forum.

Though DVD Lab's official website states it can only do 1 audio, it is definitely 100% possible to author with not only multiple audios and with multiple subtitles too. :D I have done this with success. You just to have do some work around. This is possible because DVD Lab also accepts the original VOBs as is, without demuxing. DVD Lab is more powerful than you think.;)
@Rosey
I know you are working with AVI but just wanted to correct your comment and others on multiple streams support.

The answer to your question is........VirtualDubMod. Select one at a time to de-mux.

Sounds like his question to me. The rest of his post states he is going to mux them with the video and make 2 seperate files so he can use them in Dvd Lad. I thought 2CooL answered that so, I only answered the first part.
