Is there just a decoder for DivX 5?

ie not the whole DivX5 package (like DivX5ProGAIN.exe) including encoder, decoder and player?

For a PC which will be used only for watching DivX5 rips rather than making them

If all you want to do is watch DivX encodes then you could install the DivXPlayer 2.5 (http://www.divx.com/divx/player/index.php). However I don't think installing this will allow you to view DivX encodes in other players as well.

If you wish, you can install the Standard DivX Codec (http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX51Bundle.exe). It is free, and does not include the Gain software. Unlike DivX Pro, it does not have "pro" encoding features such as Bidirectional encoding (B-frames), but it certainly can be used for playing back DivX encodes that include those features.

If you just want the decoder, I suggest you:

1. install any version without spyware - event the most basic one - make a backup of divxdec.ax (in %SYSTEMROOT%\system32) and optionnaly of config.exe (in Program Files\DivX...)

2. uninstall DivX.

3. copy the 2 files back into %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 (rename config.exe to divxconfig.exe for ease of use)

4. register the codec with regsvr32 %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\divxdec.ax

5. run divxconfig.exe to configure the codec


I don't understand why DivX network does not distribute the codec by itself.

Thanks, was thinking about this last night actaully. Once before had simply copied divdxdec.ax from my main encoding PC to another viewing PC and it worked (upgraded decoder from DivX 50 to 50+), but on another PC it did not work, probably because on that PC DivX had never been installed and hence divxdec.ax had never been registered. Manually registering divxdec.ax on that PC enabled DivX playback.


I don't understand why DivX network does not distribute the codec by itself.

Ah, but that would make it too simple :D

Yeah, I've used ffdshow before and its OK, but unfortunately development seemed to have stopped in May this year and hence new features in the ever-evolving DivX5 may not be supported.

I am unawares where FFDshow fails at decoding even the latest versions of Divx. And Divx is not changing that rapidly in any event. BTW here is a page with a link to an unnoficial ffdshow compile from October 28 2003. http://www.ligh.de/software/mirrors.phtml:D

Thanx for the link. Now that you mention it...

Have had many probs trying to get ZoomPlayer 2.9 to playback XviD correctly using anything other than ffdshow-20020617.exe for XviD decoding. Have tried ffdshow-20030523alpha.exe or XviD-22032003-1.exe or XviD decoders (XviD-Dec-230203.exe, or the one in GordianKnot.CodecPack.1.5.exe) but they always gave corrupt XviD playback or ZP lockups (XviD displayed OK in WMP6.4 but not in ZP).
