I used GKnot .27 to make a DivX backup of Two Towersusing the DivX 5.05 codec. I decided I wanted to keep the 5.1 surround audio so instead of converting the AC3 to an MP3 I simply muxed the AC3 with the encoded video. Everything seemed to work fine. Windows media player can play back my finished movie without errors.
Here's my problem though.. what application can I use to play the movie back that will support DivX video AND play the audio back with 5.1 surround??
For example: I can run just the AC3 through PowerDVD and I get the audio in full 5.1 sound. But if I put the DivX video through it PowerDVD crashes. I can put just the video through winamp but if I put the AC3 through winamp it will crash. And while windows media player can play both I do not get 5.1 sound. I get regular stereo.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi codename_46, I have a few:

1. Read over the AC3 FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18318), sticky in this forum, to learn some of the basic ideas of what you're trying to playback. Also please read over the forum rules, especially rule 1.

2. Essentially, you'll need to have an AC3 Directshow filter installed (I'd recommend AC3Filter (http://ac3filter.sf.net)), and play your .avi in a good media player, I'd recommend Gabest's Media Player Classic or Media Player 6.4. Winamp is not optimized for movie playback, especially with surround sound. Make sure to configure Ac3filter (Start > Programs > AC3Filter > AC3Filter Config ) to playback 5.1 or S/PDIF, depending on your connection, which you didn't mention in your post. hth,

Actually I already have AC3 filter. It installed itself automatically along with GKnot .27. I never could quite figure out how to make it work though. But after downloading Gabest's media player I found out why. AC3 filter isn't supported by WMP 8. So I downloaded the latest version of AC3 filter and installed it and now everything runs great. Thanks for letting me know about Gabest :D
