I downloaded and compiled the sources myself. The last time I did a check-out of the CVS server ( dev-api-4 of course ;) ) was on Oct 19th. I don't change anything in the sources ( I think Nic and Koepi make little changes to enable some optimizations // I'm making a "vanilla build" ) and I use MS Visual C++ 6.0 Professional ( SP5 + Proc. Pack ) for compiling.

And I won't give this build to anyone! AFAIK the devs still don't want to make it public so I won't spread it. No need to PM me or anything. ;)

welcome to the forum. Read the forum rules (especially rule 1, the first, allmighty rule. SEARCH before asking. This is the 100st thread about "what's the difference between the binaries". We have a FAQ on top of the xvid forum. Read it. I mean it).

@all:
surprisingly I use my binaries too ;) . But currently I'm fiddling with dev-api-4, i.e. added already a nice checkbox for the cartoon mode, currently trying to properly add optimized memcpy()'s to my local tree - as Eyecannon mentioned, there's a build out which is using AMD copyrighted routines - GomGom implemented some ASM which is derived from xine and thus GPLed. So you all will benefit from optimized memcpy's when 1.0 arrives (which will be quite soon if i look at the rapid development).

How does one find out which build they're using? I have no idea if I've got dev 3 or dev 4. I can't find anyplace in the xvid configuration that tells you the version or build being used.

How to find out which version you use:

a) fire up virtualdub(mod). Go to video -> compression. Select "xvid". Hit the "About" button. There you'll see i.e. "(Vanilla CVS build)". This is most likely the case with uManiacs builds, I don't know if Nic modifies that value. In my binaries, you'll see "(Koepi's build: bla)" where bla indicates a small summary of the changes i made against CVS.

b) Look at the name of your installer file.

If it's called "XviD_installer.exe" it's a binary from Nic.
If it's called "XviD-xx.yy.zz-hh.mm-root.exe" it's from uManiac (xx.yy.zz-hh.mm are date-time, the "root" there is the indicator).
My builds are called like XviD-xxyyzzzz-r.exe - xxyyzzzz being the date again, the -r is the "release" on that day.

@Candock: Again groundless statement without any prove. When you talk like this (especially in XviD forum) you should prove what you are saying. Please post your results and your settings, so we all can see and agree with you. Please learn how to behave on this forum. :rolleyes:

BTW if you are unsatisfied with half a year old build (which isn't latest either, Koepi released his last build on 24/06/03 and it's still great nowadays IMHO), you are free to download latest dev-api-4 source from CVS and compile your own build (as many of us do).

The reason i'm still using xvid is, the new codecs didn't convince me they are really better, except h.264, but it still hasn't got usable implementation. VP6 was a disappointment to me, WMV9 is good, but not superior to xvid.

Rududu codec is very interesting, but not mature enough for everyday use.

Tell what codec is better than XviD? Share your results and why people shouldn't use XviD if you can get same results with some other codecs? Still? You're free to use whatever codec you like but stop talking like that...

No ZZZero, you're using my latest public (unstable ;) ) build called XviD-24062003-1.exe - but it's very stable, that "unstable" title just means it's a development build.

Although I never had problems with XviD qualitywise, I read this forum long enough to know that many people have problems getting a good quality. So maybe it's really 'hard' to use and some people don't get along with it. I would say if you know how to write good avisynth scripts and how to use XviD, it's the codec to choose (I also do encodes with 500kb/s with good quality). I'm using a build I compiled from CVS checkout on Halloween :-)

I believe as recently as a year ago Nandub was still much better than Xvid. But this was a year ago, and Xvid has improved by orders of magnitude since then.

Maybe we all like more control and just are not satisfied with all-in-one solutions. Maybe we like it because it's open source. Maybe we just test it. Maybe we like the name. Maybe we like because it's free (no boring adware, trials, nags...). Maybe...

I'm using Koepi's 24062003-1 build, other codecs just "don't fit my needs" :).

Me too I use Lastest Koepi's build.

I like Xivd over other codecs because it's fully customizable, I really don't like the One-Click-And-Go software. Nowadays everybody just believe to PSNR and other tests ... but they have no mean if a codec can't be tweaked to reach your final target (example More Bframes, VHQ, Trellis and other particular settings that can't be set in other codecs).

A lot of people brame XviD for its "configuration difficulty". Anyways, I don´t see it in that way. Of course XviD has a lot of options, what gives it a full control over all its features. Anyways, with a standar configuration, without changing anything, you can get good results (in most of the cases better that other MPEG-4 codecs). And if you know the codec a litle, the possibilities are great.

In my point of view, I think is better to have, that to desire.
