View Full Version : 16:9 Interlaced Video encodes with change of aspect ratio

Hello, everybody:

I've been trying to encode "War & Peace" (NTSC,
released by russian joint) by DVD2SVCD latest
build (using CCE 2.67.013 and Scenarist 2.7),
and encoded video looses original 16:9 aspect
ratio - it becomes stretched vertically, still
with black stripes above and below, but it's
stretched vertically from 16:9 a bit.

I've tried all three settings in DVD2SVCD for
aspect ratio - all give the same result.

When I encode it with DVD Shrink - it comes out
fine, as the original, so only DVD2SVCD makes
a mistake.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
ketseven

You probably want to try either FACAR or use Gripfit/crop/resize.

There is an example with Gripfit in the Avisynth scritp database.

i think its because DVD shrink adds 16:9 flags in your files. Where as DVD2SVCD just encodes the video.

You might have change AR yourself.

@ketseven,

Please post your log file and your AVS script.

I'm curious about why almost no newcomer bothers to read the stickies. Would you please give us your personal reasons? Maybe we can improve the readings (I mean this). Your input would be much appreciated.

D9: Moved to basic.

Edit: sounded ruder than pretended.

Sorry, guys! I hope I did not offend anyone.

That's definitely something wrong with AR flag.
I would highly appreciate if somebody would help
and suggest how to change it by hand after encoding.

I also run into the same problem when ripping and
re-encoding "bon jovi: the crush tour". This video
is 16:9, interlaced, BFF. But after
DVD2DVD/CCE/SCENARIST trio it becomes 4:3, so the
result is stretched in vertical direction.

Thanks a lot,
ketseven

Use dvdpatcher to change AR in your *.mpg; *.vob or *.mpv file
Available in Doom9's download area (full SW page)
http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/svcdtools/DVDPatcher_v105b.zip

Anyway, it will be useful to have your logfile to see why dvd2svcd has encoded it with a wrong AR. When it happens to me, always there is a reason (usually bad settings from my side)

Thanks, jsoto! I have tried to use DVDpatcher
and change the resulting 4:3 aspect back to
16:9.

It helps only partially, DVD2AVI now reports
correct 16:9 aspect ratio, but POWERDVD still
plays the video as 4:3, so it's still stretched
vertically.

Here's my SVCD2DVD log file for encoding one
chepter of BON JOVI: CRUSH TOUR dvd (NTSC, Interlaced,
Bottom field first, 16:9).

I will appreciate any help. I run into such "aspect
ratio" problem only with "interlaced" dvds.

Don't know if you resolved it yet, check if in Encoder tab advanced section dvd compliant is UNchecked.

Do you have "keep interlaced" selected on the conversion tab?

You will always get 4:3 if you have.

Hi all,

I am the same problem as the topicstarter with interlaced DVDs when trying to encode to DVDR. The original DVD is anamorphic 16:9. I would like the copy to be anamorphic 16:9 as well, but it always comes out as 4:3, no matter what I try. Unlike the topicstarter I dont get a stretched picture because using AutoFitCD I correct this by clicking 3/4 DVD instead of DVD in the AutoFitCD preview window.

I am using the latest DVD2SVCD in combination with D2SRoBa v3.0.8 and AutoFitCD 1.5.

I always have DVD compliant UNchecked.

What option do I have to set for a DVD2DVDR encode? No deinterlacing?
Anyway....I will try this...see if it helps me out.

If anyone else reading this post has an suggestions for me, feel free to let me know. Any help is appreciated. I will post it here if ralphthedog's suggestion fixes the problem.

@Moondust

I think using "no deinterlacing" in the conversion tab is the best bet for 16:9 interlaced source. Most DVD's here in Australia are interlaced PAL.........works for me anyway!

Don't. The fact that it has sort of worked for you is mere chance. What you are doing is change the output size.

Try using FitCD interlaced resizing and please report back. If you want anamoprphic output, check the box on AutoFitCD and make sure DVD2SVCD gets the message (Conversion tab).

Yes, it worked and I didnt have to change the output. It's 16:9 now and in PowerDVD it runs just fine.

When using "No deinterlacing" the interlaced resizing option is unchecked. When checking it in the preview window, makes the picture move down a couple of millimeters. I am going to run an encode in a few minutes. I will report back tonight or tomorrow.

Thank you all for your input in this matter! ;-)

Not in my setup. I tested with both PAL and NTSC sources.

I did an encode with the interlaced resizing option checked and it came out perfectly. Thnx r6d2!
