I have had this drive for a few months now and I still get about 50%
coasters when I back up DVD's using Nero 6 (latest update). This is how I
usually do it.
1) Rip DVD to HD using DVD Decryptor selecting movie only.
2) Use DVD2One to compress the movie only files into under 4.7gb.
3) Use Nero 6 to write the files to a DVD-R in my Sony at 4X or 2X.
Sometimes it works great but mostly I get chapter stop issues. It will play
for maybe half the movie then at a chapter stop it will freeze or return to
the beginning of the movie. Any ideas?

I would check your media. Maybe take a look and see what other media people are having luck with. Sony DRX510UL (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDname=Sony+DRX510UL&Submit=Search&cdrs=&cdrws=&dvdrs=&dvdrws=&dvdprs=&dvdprws=&dvdrams=&buffer=Any&list=0&Search=Search). Good luck

I am sorry I meant Memorex DVD-R is what I have been using. I would say of 25 discs I had 10 coasters as I described above (will play but lock up in the middle).

I don't about the sony but I do know that Memorex DVD-R for my A04 are junk!!! But you should say the Manufacturer of the media and that will tell for sure if they are junk. Try this tool works good.(thanks Laz)

I picked up some Sony 2X last night and burned a couple backups using Shrink and DVD2One - both were perfect copies. I am glad to hear you report that the Memorex media might be the issue. When I get home I will run the program you suggested and see what the Memorex's are. Thanks again.

I finally watched the backup of Temple of Doom I made and it did get glitchy toward the end and locked up several times. This was on the Sony disks so I guess the media isn't the problem.... I re-burnt the disk using Clone DVD instead of Nero 6.0.0.11 and it "seems" to be a perfect copy although I have only watched about half of it so far. Maybe it's Nero's fault. I noticed there is a 6.0.0.15 out now I will try that tonight and run a new backup of Doom before I watch it... wow this is getting expensive. I just hope it's not the Sony drive or I am going to be really pissed.

"This was on the Sony disks so I guess the media isn't the problem...."
You still never said who is the Manufacturer of the media. For all we know your still using cheap junk media. Just because a media has a name on it doesn't mean its not junk!!! As alexnoe says:
You shouldn't use generic cheap and sometimescrappy media that sometimes work and sometimes doesn't... you should use Mitsubishi Chemical, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden media to avoid those problems. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64109) Hope that helps.:)

I ran the media identifier on the Verbatim Datalife DVD+R 4x I got yesterday and they came up as - MCC or this:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=140#comments
The Sony's came up as Sony manufactorer.
The Verbatims glitched out just like the Memorex 4x about 1/4 of the way though the movie.
I just noticed a new firmware update for the Sony 1.0d - will try tonight and burn the same movie again.

After talking to Sony tech support a couple nights ago he suggested the following:
1. Uninstall all burning programs and just install one. He said Nero is great and works well with the Sony.
2. Upgrade firmware to 1.0d (I was at 1.0c)
3. In device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller - I have NVIDIA NForce MCP2 IDE controller. He had me update driver back to the default windows XP driver.
4. Update ASPI drivers to the newest Adaptec ones located here :
http://download.Adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi_471a2.exe
Previous to the above steps my burner failed Sony's drive test utility with a read error. After the above steps it passed and I have made two successful movie backups since. A couple small glitches on my backup of Hulk but no picture freeze or chapter stop issues this time. My motherboard is the Asus A7N8X-Deluxe which is a Nforce2 board. I hope this helps someone in the future...

I have a Sony external burner and have burned about 200 disk nearly my entire collection and then some. If you have the latest firmware, I would say it's your Media. I have found the most reliable inexpensive disks to be O1ne disks in various speeds. With cheaper disks like bulkpaq, yellow and red versions of Datawrite i ended up with some disks writing ok and then a pile of coasters.
Hope this helps O1ne disks can be bought in the UK for about £15 for 25 in 4 speed
