Hi ! It's my first attempt for a DVD backup, so if I sound like a noob, well, that's cuz I am. Please be patient with me if I'm asking something that's already been answered and I just couldn't find using 'search'.
Anyway, I'm trying to rip out part of the video_ts.vob. So far, I have it the way I want in the form of an mpeg2 file. I'd like to convert this to a vob. Also, the following might cause a problem : the part I ripped out is the first thing you see when you "play" the movie.
Also, when I play, halfway during the movie, it just stops, asking me to clean the disc ...
I'm following the tutorial Scenarist and the Big 3. Since ReAuthorist does most of the work (lucky!) it also means I have no idea what I can do with Scenarist, or how to work it.
Another , but smaller prob : for some weird reason, all my subs are grey and therefore really hard to read.
Any pointers or directions on where to look for the info I need ? Would be great !

hi and welcome to the forum,
honestly you got me a little confused there.
you said you are trying to rip (or better have already ripped) out a part of the video_ts.vob file. so most likely what you are talking about is some kind of intro, a dolby (or similar) logo or something alike.
but lateron in your post you talk about the middle of the movie, so are you still talkingn about the same dvd or are those two seperate problems?
"Also, when I play, halfway during the movie, it just stops, asking me to clean the disc ."
this is most likely caused by an error on the disc. you could check that by burning the movie to a DVD-/+RW and see if the problem persists.

if you provide some more information i'm sure that we'll be able to come up with some more help for you!

First, thanks for the welcome !
Sorry for being confusing. I guess they are 3 seperate problems, but for the same DVD backup. I followed the Scenarist & the Big 3 guide, thinking that would be all I needed to do ...
I'm trying to backup the PAL version of Metropolis "as is", with the exception of the BREIN warning (the Dutch "hey, contact us if this isn't the original"). But I think there's a guide here, I just spotted it. The only question concerning this now would be, where in the Big 3 process will I fire up this Ifo Edit to start working the vob IDs ?
The second problem is with the subs ... I ripped them according to the guide and when I view the .bmp's in a image tool, they are white, as they oughta be. But when I play the movie, they are grey, and hard to read.
The third problem occurs during play. It just stops, telling me to clean the disc (it's freshly burned, so how can it be dirty ?) I think I read a little about cheap media (I burned it on a Princo ... I guess I'll need Verbatim or something similar ?), maybe that's it ? Or maybe something with those ID's ? If it was the cheap media, it should have problems in the beginning as well, right ? I'm kinda in the dark here, so this all might seem a little foggy, sorry for that.
For future reference : Since it concerns 3 different questions, should I use 3 seperate threads instead ?

hi,
ok this is quite a bit better now :)
The only question concerning this now would be, where in the Big 3 process will I fire up this Ifo Edit to start working the vob IDs ?
well i'd say, just before the end of the process. in other words, either before you do the ifoupdate, or afterwards, but certainly before you create the iso file from the vob ifo and bup files!
subs
well it has something to do with wrong colour settings in the scenarist project you created. but honestly i do not know where you should be able to change those in the 'Big 3 process', this, i guess, is a problem for the real scenarist experts :)
3rd problem: well honestly, this can have several causes. most likely either your burner OR your player are incompatible with the media you've used. to check this just use DVDR Identifier (http://dvdplusid.cdfreaks.com/) to get the media code and then check the compatibility with your devices at www.dvdrhelp.com
For future reference : Since it concerns 3 different questions, should I use 3 seperate threads instead ?
no, it's perfectly fine this way. just take your time to elaborate your problem clearly. if yout post looks like you were willing to put some time into it, other members are also more likely to compose a longer, more detailed and therefore more helpful response! :)

PS: if you think that you'll get more answers in the 'Big 3 forum' please tell me to move it, i'm personally not sure what will be better!

Here is a mini guide on subs and colors in Scenarist.
Here is some elementary things about subs coding. I hope that I am not repeating things u allready know.
Each subttile has only 4 colors. Black, Red, Blue, White.
Corresponding these 4 primary colors to a palette user can display any color he wants from a palette of 16 colors.
U can see this clearly if u insert the subtitles in a track, select it and going to the simulation window.
To the bottom part u will see 5 tabs, the last one named Subpicture and Highlight.
Select the option Colors, just below it.
U can see the 4 Primary colors and the current correspondance.
Lets suppose that your subpictures have red background, black stroke and blue letters. If they r not u may as well create one like that and continue reading.
The second primary color is Red. This is used for the background.
Across it there is a percentage that displays a number in.
0% is trasparent - 100% is opaque.
We need 0% as the background shouldn't be visible at all.
Make this 0%.
Hit the encode button. 2nd from the right, top floating palette, left of the PC button.
The background, if it was cluttering the movie should be gone.
Now on to define the color for the text.
The Primary used is blue, so we r interested in the 3d one.
Obviously we want opaque text so the opacity should be 100%. Change it.
Now click on the color swatch that has the opacity on.
It should reveal the 16 color palette.
Suppose that u want the text white. Locate the white swatch.
In the default color palette, Scenarist has it on position 4. Mark this number.
Positions r countered left to right, top to bottom. So the 2nd from the left, 2nd row should be color 6.
Hit encode again. The text is opaque white now.
Now on we go for the stroke
If u don;'t want any change the opacity to 0%. If u want u can select the color from the palette.
Now its time to take a note about the opacities and color numbers.
Primary 1, black hasn't changed at all, so we leave it as is.
Primary 2, red has changed opacity to 0%
Primary 3, Blue has changed color to 4
Primary 4, White hasn't changed at all.
------------------------
Now open up the sst file with notepad
Locate the Contrast line and changed the second value to 0. Background transparent.
Locate the color line
Change the 3d number to 4. Text White. The actual number here depends on the position of the white swatch according to your palette.
Save the sst file and Re-Import the subs in Scenarist
U r done.
as for the clean your disk part, this is definetely cheap media, Princos r famous for their drop outs. Trash them. I am only trusting riteks or datawrites with ritek or tdk dye.
