Xvid to Upconvert DVD Closer to HD Resolution`

Hi,
I've recently purchased a Liteon 2001 DVD player. It upconverts DVD or Xvid/Divx files to 1080i for my HDTV. I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to upconvert some DVDs to HD resolution Xvid files? I guess the only benefit would be if Xvid could upconvert better than the Sigma Designs chipset. I've just started doing Xvid with Gordian Knot (previously all my conversions were to DVD or SVCD) and it seems the highest I can covert is 800 X 432.

Please search for "undersized DivX/Xvid".You will get the answer.

Very bad idea if you ask me. You want it to still play on the Lite-On, don't you? And don't they max out at 720x480/576 for smooth playback? I'd say that the higher the resolution (assuming you're also upping the bitrate by an appropriate amount), the better the chance that it'll stutter and hiccup during complex scenes. And it's not as if you're creating more detail by increasing the resolution, no matter what AviSynth tricks you use.

I say let the player do the scaling. The end result should be smoother playback.

But having said that, it wouldn't hurt to try. I'd be curious as to the results.

I'm unsure what the limitation is on playback. I was more interested in seeing what the hardware would do than actually converting a lot of movies. I've done some clips now at 800 X 432 and they seem to play back fine. I was interested to see if it would handle HD resolution clips so that if you were able to capture HD tv series on a PC and then archive them for later playback (I'd love to be able to timeshift CSI in HD). So far I've been able to view higher res clips at 960 X 512 etc. in Gordian Knot but when I save it to encode the reize always goes back to 800 X 432. I'll reread all the attached links and see if I can solve some of my problems.

Just edit the GKnot generated .avs to the resolution you wish. I don't know how high of a resolution the encoder (VDubMod) can handle, though.

XviD and VDM will handle 1600x* resolution fine. I've tried it with the Matrix Reloaded trailer (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51315).

Sorry about the confusion just to clarify, I wanted to try it with DVDs to see if it would look any better and if the player would handle the increased resolution. Right now I can't capture HD but I've been tempted to get one of the MyHD Cards.

Well thanks for everyone's help. I upconverted a clip to a bunch of different resolutions. Unfortunately the player chokes on anything greater than 832 X 448. Well it was fun trying anyway

XviD can handle horizontal resolutions up to about 1900 pixels after which the codec fails. See here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54862&highlight=Xvid+size).

VDmod will take pretty big frames...

i've actually used avisynth image loader/writer, vaguedenoiser and VDM to de-noise some grainy Digicam pics. these are about 2048x1600 or more, so i wouldn't be worried.

that said, the process was pretty slow.

I once XSharpened an image scanned at 600dpi :D. And enhanced some manga stuff for printing out.

I regularly encode HDTV clips at resolutions of 1280x720p or even 1440x816p with no problems. I don't go any larger because that seems to be about all the effective resolution in the source and because I wouldn't have the CPU to be able to play them.
