View Full Version : DVD2DVD/CCE2.5 Subtitle stream artefact (white vertical line)

Hello,

RE: Mr Bass' DVD2DVD guide using CCE v2.5 & Scenarist.

Firstly, many thanks to Mr. Bass for the excellent guide & to D2S for the excellent program. This is my first attempt at using DVD2DVD.

I will apologise in advance if this post gets on anybodys nerves; I have already searched and read pages but as yet haven't found a definitive answer. BTW, this is not a media problem, I have done several IC & Shrink backups with no problem. However, I am a complete newbie to DVD2DVD and its component programs / plugins.

When following Mr. Bass' guide for DVD2DVD with Star Wars Episode 2 (UK Region 2 PAL), I get a white vertical line (artefact) on the chapter where the yellow introductory writing is scrolling up the screen. It is positioned about a third of the way down the screen in the centre. All the other chapters seem ok. This occurs when playing back using PowerDVD XP4 and on my Pioneer DV656A stand alone. A DVD Shrink backup does not produce an artefact with the subtitles enabled, nor does the original disc. The defect is only visible when the subtitles are enabled; so it is contained in the subtitle stream.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks for any help in advance.

Equipment: Athlon XP1800+ & 512MB RAM, VIA KT266A chipset (with latest motherboard drivers as recommended).

Software:
WinXP Pro with SP1 & all critical updates installed.
CCE 2.5 without CRC patch (downloaded from this site).
Scenarist Pro 2.7
DVD2DVD 1.2.1 b3 bundle.

Ripping Method:
Ripped all files using DVD Decrypter 3170 in file mode.

DVD2DVD Settings (very similar to Mr Bass' recommendations):
Misc tab: DVD2SVCD level: advanced.

Conversion tab - no deinterlacing.
Multipass VBR - 2 passes (in order to save time).

Encoder tab - Safemode unticked.
Image Qual Priority 17 (I've read elsewhere a recommendation of 5; could this be the problem, or does it just affect bit rate distribution?)
Anti noise filter unticked
Bias 20
Field code automatic
Time code 00:00:00:00 it was a default of 01:00:00:00 but I changed it to all zeros like Mr Bass' screenshot (I don't understand the ramifications).

Frameserver tab:
No editing checked
Add Sample audio checked (since I saw it was recommended for an Athlon).
Bilinear resize used (changed from the default of Bicubic to match Mr Bass' screenshot).

CCE Advanced Settings:
Linear quantizer scale :checked
Zigzag scanning order: checked
DVD Compliant: unchecked
Progressive frames: checked
Intra dc precision: Auto checked (10 displayed)
Use CCE Template unchecked
Colour Conversion: YUY2
GOP: M=3 N/M=4 Seq Header every 1
Restrict Auto I Frame Insertion: unchecked
Close all GOPS: unchecked

After reading several pages on the DVD2SVCD & CCE forums, I have gathered there is a CRC patch for CCE2.5. I have now installed this.
Also, people have recommended using internal routines to rip, so I have now started the process again using internal routines with the CRC patch applied. In the meantime, I wondered if anyone else had any suggestions.

Many thanks in advance.

Update:

Unfortunately, installing the CCE CRC patch and ripping with internal routines did not do the trick; the subtitle artefact is still visible.

Additional issue:
Missing 2nd subtitle stream (with the 2nd rip - not the log above - I screwed up the subtitle selection in the first attempt)

I selected the forced subtitle stream as stream 1 and the normal subs as stream 2.

I received this in the log (which looks fine to me):

Subtitle extraction finished. Extracted these subtitles:
SVCD Stream no: 1 Language: English Num. of subs: 37
SVCD Stream no: 2 Language: English Num. of subs: 1341

Unfortunately, only Stream 1 appeared in the final output; any thoughts or suggestions?

In addition, the remaining stream was not forced like the original disc. I could force it using ifoedit (2cools guide) but I thought that's what the forced box was supposed to do. Whenever I check the forced box DVD2DVD reports that there was no subtitles found in the stream - like in the first log posted above. Clearly I don't know how to use the forced option - an explanation of what it does and how to use it would be much appreciated (I have searched).

Update 2:

I am still struggling to acheive an output that contains 2 subtitle streams (as well as the subtitle artefact).

As you can see there are clearly two streams imported but they are crossed over - i.e en1*.bmp becomes def_subtitle-st1 & en2*.bmp becomes def_subtitle-st0. Only en1*.bmp is available in the final output (and they are not forced). I looked at the resultant VTS_01_0.IFO using ifoedit and found only one stream so only one stream is being created in Scenarist. (It is nothing to do with the old bug where the 2nd stream had 2 ids).

Is this a bug with scenarist or am I doing something wrong.

Cheers for any help / ideas.

Update:
I found RB's post http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39755&highlight=star+wars+dvd2svcd+subtitle it seems the .bmp files contain this artefact. Is there any way to resolve this issue. Is the complex authoring of this DVD also causing only one sub stream to be encoded?

Hello again,

I have done another couple of tests this week (with different source material), and each time, the final output only has one available subtitle stream despite two different ones being selected in DVD2DVD.

I'm sure someone must have successfully done this. If so could you please post, in order to indicate it is actually possible.

Regards,
Bob

BTW the star wars ep2 subtitle defect is still present, I don't know how to remove it.
