NTSC black and white silent film

Hello,

I have bought "Die Nibelungen" (Fritz Lang, 5 hours, remastered) and I wanted some advices to rip it. I have read the documentation on the ivtc and the de-interlacing (on doom9) but I have some difficulties to know what I have to do:

1) It is a silent (there is some music...), black and white NTSC film, 4/3
2)The .d2v file (Field Op. NONE) gives me a uniform pattern: only 2, and there is 0% FILM, 29.970 fps. OK, it is not surprising, this should be a NTSC film :)
3) When I look at the film with VdM, I have 2 interlaced frames every 3 frames.

From the documentation, i should not do IVTC (the film should have 2 interlaced frames every 5 frames), it also seems that this silent film is not produced as usual. Perhaps it has been produced as NTSC Pure Interlace.

It seems to me that I should only de-interlace it. But perhaps I have not understood correctly the doc. It is the first time I rip a BnW silent NTSC film (I'm used to rip PAL films...). Does someone have some advices ?

telecide should be able to handle the messed-up IVTC.. it's just a matter of knowing how to decimate it.

i'd figure that one by just looking thru in VDM with telecide on, and count the cycles of repeated frames. shouldn't be tooo difficult.

if it's a silent film, it's possible there's mixed content with some scenes at 24 fps and some at 16. this is true of lang's Metropolis.

in that case, i'd leave it at 30fps and let a dup filter and your video compressor handle the dup'd frames. with Xvid and similar, you don't lose much from repeated frames (like maybe 10 bytes per frame for exact duplicates like you'd get from running the dup() plugin)

They're on the DVDs at 20fps. You "IVTC", but Decimate(3).

However, there's a better way to do it. It's a lousy PAL to NTSC conversion and is filled with blended fields. To get rid of most of the blends, first run the RePAL filter to bring it to 25fps. Then Decimate(5) to get 20fps. I wish RePAL had been available when I did those films, as they're wonderful, and very powerful. Two of the best of all silent films.

just one another question: does someone has repal with YV12 support ? I have read the posts on the Bach/Mozart story and, inforunately, I have found the post on the YV12 support quite empty...
(i know how to use repal YUY2, it is just for the speed that i want repal YV12)

The version at the link I gave before is for YV12. And even with that one it's fairly slow.

That's right. When I unzipped repal, some files have a name finishing by YUY2.

sorry for a bump though :o but hey, it's an excellent movie! Just got the dvd in my mail :)

I was just wondering if in these times, this would be perhaps a better alternative?

previewing in vdubmod seemed a bit weird, but maybe it's just my computer slowing down with an encode running in the back. Gonna run a sample encode test later when I get back home. Just wanted to be sure if there's an updated opinion on this masterpiece's FPS :)

edit: worked flawlessly! so thanks very much manono, though it's an old thread :) now to test filters on it :) dunno if mrestore() was necessary but it works so... :p
