I donīt understand how these "hacked" firmwares that allow a 1x DVD to be burnt at 2x.

I always thought the speed of burning was limited by the speed of the disc, but with these new firmware, this seems to be not true.

Does somebody know how this works?

How I understand it is that there is a definate speed restriction imposed by the mechanics of the drive and media, but in general, these are much higher than what the software limits are.

So if people find that a certain drive can in fact safely burn discs at higher speeds than was specified, a firmware can be written to "unlock" the faster mode.
