I've been doing Xvid encoding for quite a while, it's safe to say I've done several dozen to maybe a couple hundred encodes. In all that time I've never had a problem with an encoding, except ones where it was my fault because I put in a bogus value by accident or something.
Just recently I encoded a disc of a season to the X-Files and 3/4 episodes encoded great, the last one started getting terrible garbage though, extremely blockly encoding, some color bleeding, obvious keyframe jumps, it was horrible, worse than a bad MPEG encoding. I plan to re-encode this once I clear enough free space again, but in the meantime, does anybody have an idea as to what the hell happened? Even though I say 3/4 episodes, they're not seperate encoding jobs, they're all merged VOB files, I normally seperate them after encoding. I'm using Koepi's latest stable build, I saved the project with no change from DVD2AVI and inverse telecine do get rid of interlacing (I've found this gives me by far the smoothest picture for TV-show based DVD's. Forced Film still shows interlace lines at points. I've never had a problem with this before.)
I set up my encode in Gordian Knot, used Lancoz filter, resized to 640x480. I then ran the .avs seperately through virtualdub, Lvl. 6 motion precision, MPEG quantization, XVID FourCC, minimum keyframe interval of 1, max of 240, all other settings left to default. Again, I've done this a jillion times, and even then, the other 1.5+ hours looks great, I don't understand what caused it. It's not the Xvid decoding filter as I can see the distortion clearly in frame by frame in Vdub. As much as I've used it, I'm still only an Xvid user, much of the more technical aspects alude me, so I'm interested in what people might suggest to avoid this sort of thing in the future. Thanks!
