View Full Version : Backup problems (whole disc)

I'm trying to backup several complete DVD's (menus, extras, the whole shebang). I succeeded in producing a useable disc once, but now am suddenly having problems. My current attempts will not play on a standard player, only the computer.
I use DVD Decrypter to copy it to my hard drive, then DVD Shrink to reduce its size. I've even tried using InfoEdit to strip the VOB ID's, even though I don't really understand what that means.
I have noticed that, once I shrink the movie, there are fewer VOB files in the main movie section. That is, rather than reducing seven large files to seven small files, it converts them into four large files. I thought that might have messed up the IFO but that would mean it wouldn't play at all, wouldn't it.
Thanks. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

What media do you use? Many problems comes from using bad media.

Don' use IfoEdit unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing. Read doom9's guides once more before attemting to use that proggie. strip vobs means remove unwanted parts of the DVD which I believe is NOT what you wanted to do.I have noticed that, once I shrink the movie, there are fewer VOB files in the main movie section. That is, rather than reducing seven large files to seven small files, it converts them into four large files. I thought that might have messed up the IFO but that would mean it wouldn't play at all, wouldn't it. This is expected: all vobs in a set (vts_0x_y.vob) is treated by the player as one file and is split at a suitable point, approx 1GB into the video stream. So if you reduce a 7GB vobset (i.e.vts_01_y.vob) to 4GB then you'll only end up with four new vob files.
Once again, read all doom9's guides - link at bottom of (every) page. You'll find many interesting things there if you haven't read them already.

Hakko504 has given you a good heads up, as much of the time this problem is related to media incompatibility. Check out your player at www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers and see what you come up with.

Your problem could also be what you burn your DVDs with. I keep seeing people report difficulties with Nero.
I highly recommend creating an ISO image using Image Tool Classic, then burn the ISO using DVDDecrypter.

and do perform a 'Get VTS Sector' in ifoedit. There r detailed instructions on the guide and in this board.
Never miss it. 80% is a redundant step that it doesn't do any harm, but in the 20% it can really save your day, time, disk :)

Thanks a lot for all the advice. I finally had a chance to follow up on it and have had complete success. Thanks.

What did you do that gave you the success?
