splitting tool ???

I know this may not be the right forum; if not, apologies; please direct me. I have a basic editing task, and am seeking a better tool.

I have DV input, and .wmv output.

How I do it now: I have DV (camcorder) footage coming in about 1-hour chunks into my WinXP-Pro PC via firewire, currently into Windows Movie Maker. I then split the footage manually into many different 3-minute segments, then files, which are then distributed to various individuals. Long story. Also, very tedious using this tool. However, the only software that all the various individuals have is WMM, so I'd prefer to keep the material in .wmv format.

What I'd like: an editing tool that can import DV and allow easy creation of multiple split points, so that the individual 3-min files can be created in one pass, preferably with a .wmv output.

Any advice on the tool would be appreciated. I'm not sure, but the bundled suites seem to work with other file formats. If I've made any errors in my understanding of what I'm trying to do, I'd also appreciate any correction or education. THANKS.

Let's see if I got you right:
You have a single DV file, and you want a software which is able to set multiple markers and export to multiple WMV files?

Well, you can do the cutting and WMV creation with almost any DV editing software (provided that it supports WMV output). But for the multiple export in a single pass you'd need a macro or batch functionality. Don't know, sorry.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I got lucky last night. So to speak. I was googling around, searching with terms like "wmv" and "splitter", and found a program that does just about exactly what I want. I have to use WMM to bring in the DV stream and convert it to the one big .wmv file, which can pretty much happen unattended, but after that, initial testing indicates that this tool is cool.

Hm, should be better to cut the DV file, and create small WMV clips, instead of creating a big WMV first, and trying to cut then. You know, you can split DV files frame accurately without any re-encoding, which is not possible with WMV (keyframes only or partial re-encoding needed).
