512 to 1024 memory upgrade?

I am thinking of adding another stick of 512mb of pc3200 memory to my system. I am doing video editing and dvd burning. What kind of performance increase should i expect from this upgrade? Will it increase speed for converting dv-avi files to mpeg-2?

start something going just now and check in task manager how much memory the current processes are taking. i think generally speaking a gig would be lovely for encoding. depends on what you're using too, different progs work differently with large amounts of memory.

I did such an upgrade 2 weeks ago and I think i don't feel any (huge) difference. The applications running next to the encoding stuff are a little more responsive, but else there is no speedup or whatsoever.

The total amount of RAM that your applications use probably never comes very close to 512MB. So, at that point you are most likely to see a benefit from caching of the harddrive. The more RAM you have, the longer you will go before an applications harddrive cache is replaced by your video's. This should translate into a more responsive system once you have hit a certain point in encoding a video of at least 200MB in size. (windows will cache what it is read AND writing, so when encoding windows is caching the video you are reading from, and the video you are writing)

I think upgrading to a faster processor can only increase encoding speed.For now the current amount of RAM is enough.

did the upgrade quite a while ago, not primarily for encoding pruposes though, but didn't really see any significant increases in both dv/mpeg4 to mpeg2 or mpeg2 to mpeg 4 conversations...
