Capture from vcr

Have been attempting to capture an old camcorder tape from a vcr using a scart to svideo adaptor. My capture card, Navis hardware mpeg, tells me it cannot detect a vertical sync signal. Thought I had a duff adaptor but it works fine through my tv svideo input. The vcr is a few years old and I read on this forum that it may not be putting out svideo through the scart, but it does to the television.
I am not sure now if a more modern vcr with a dedicated svideo out would be the answer.

Maybe it's not so much not detecting a vertical sync as it is not finding a stable vertical sync. TVs are rather immune to variances in vertical and horizontal sync rates. It could be the TV is able to lock onto the sync the VCR is generating, but the signal isn't stable enough for the video card. You might need a timebase corrector for that set up.

If you wish to check whether it's the VCR's fault, borrow one from a friend, or rent one for a day or two. If that clears the problem, go get a new VCR. If not, you haven't blown your money on a new VCR that won't help.

Worth a try. I may try a new tape to see if I get any result.I know the svideo on the capture card woks as my camcorder caps are great. Thanks
