what good is the grey scale?

I have affinity for older movies -- hmm.. influenced by my girlfriend who likes classic chick flicks (yeah, you can call me a wuss :D ) and I just like older foreign films. Many of them are black and white. Some time ago, I encoded Rashomon with the grey scale on and without it for comparison. Back then, I had no idea what I was doing -- not that I know what I am doing any better at this moment :o . So, my comparion at the time was faulty at best. So, my question is what the grey scale is intended to accomplish? What is the benefit of it? How would it affect encoding of flicks interweaving b&w and color scenes?

checking greyscale throws away the chroma information (=the colour information) - your movie is perfect b/w. (Btw., in dev-api-3 it doesn't work correctly with bframes activated)

so if there is still colour in your sources (and some dvd transfers are bad so they still show some "rainbow colours" on edges)it'll definatly remove it.

Hi-

Yes, you definitely want to greyscale black and white movies. More often than not they'll have some of that moire, rainbow stuff that Koepi mentioned. Or perhaps some filters you're using will create some color. To greyscale it, I use:

Tweak(Sat=0)

But there are other ways, as well. If you have a movie with mixed black and white and color scenes, then you can apply greyscale selectively using either Trim or ApplyRange. For example, frames 0-1000 are B&W, frames 1001-2000 are Color, and Frames 2001-3000 are B&W:

ApplyRange(0,1000,"Tweak",0.0,0.0,0.0,1.0)
ApplyRange(2001,3000,"Tweak",0.0,0.0,0.0,1.0)

Just one more question about the syntax, manono.

when you insert the followings:

<<ApplyRange(0,1000,"Tweak",0.0,0.0,0.0,1.0)
ApplyRange(2001,3000,"Tweak",0.0,0.0,0.0,1.0)>>

do you define "treak" beforehand such as <<Tweak(Sat=0)>>?

The ApplyRange settings I gave were for Sat=0. The syntax for Tweak is different when using it from within ApplyRange. You can learn more about Tweak here (http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=Tweak). And about ApplyRange here (http://www.avisynth.org/index.php?page=Animate).

In short, when using Tweak by itself, everything is assumed set to default, except for the argument(s) you specifically include. When using it from within ApplyRange, you have to list all the arguments.

Question, is it possible to combine greyscale encodes with color encodes without breaking compatibilities? I tried once and got some strange color smearing, but then I think I was using bframes.

Thanks to manono once again. I recently tried it on Raging Bull and got a great result on both b&w and color sequences. :) Probably, I will re-encode with tweak on hue some of the movies that are heavily biased toward red tint. Good day...
