View Full Version : How to capture an 8mm movie burned to a DVD?

Spouse has had 50's and 60's 8mm home movies scanned or projected to a DVD by a professional service. She wants to share a "reel" or two with family friends, without providing the whole disk. File types on the DVD are .vob, .bup, and .ifo.
How would I go about this? I know enough about ripping to be able to capture the audio from a music DVD, for example, but I don't know about the video. With music, I use Smartripper and Graphedit and get wav files as output. Is there an analogous process for the video in this case? There is no sound.
How can I get a Windows media file of some kind as output, something that any Windows PC can display? There are so many graph and file types from which to choose in Graphedit, that I don't know where to start. Am I on the right track, though?
Thanks much.

Well if your files on the DVD are all vob you can cut the VOB's with VOBCutter to select only the part of your movie that you want. Then you can use DVD2AVI to create your project and seperate the audio from your cut VOB. Then you can load your D2V project into many other programs. YOu can crete MPEGS from the rip or you can make a smaller DivX, but I recomend you just make VCD's out of the VOB's so you can watch them on DVD players.

Thank you for the prompt reply, but I must confess it's a little beyond me. A couple of reminders: there is NO sound, and I want to be able to display on and by the PC, not a DVD player. Can I get an avi file or a Windows media file or something like that?

Well MPEGS can be read by any windows, mac, linux computer without extra filters, that's why I recommended it. Consequently it can also be burned as a VCD. Also I need some more info. Do you want to copy the whole DVD or just certain scenes from it. And since audio isn't there, we don't have to worry about it. MPEG might create filesizes that are to big for you, so maybe you could use DivX 5 for your movies. Read Doom9's guide on how to create aDivX (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm) file.

Just a chapter or two to copy. If you think that MPEG is the file format of choice for doing this, then I'm open. I could burn them to CD and share that way, if they'll fit. One thing I'm not clear on from your previous post: Does DVD2AVI give MPEG as an output? Never used it before. I'm not averse to trying to pick up and learn a little about another app, but that's why I was asking about using Smartripper and GraphEdit. Can I get an MPEG that way?

Well DVD2AVI creates a D2V project that you can load in another program. That is the one you will want to use to make your mpeg. I suggest TMPEG to create your mpeg. You just load your video and then select a profile (MPEG) and then begin. It's not that hard.
