What type of games is it you are searching for?
Many games work on Linux, for example Quake III (also II&I) with many mods, UT works, UT2003 works, Soldier of Fortune I is available for Linux, also is Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2, and many others.
IIRC, Halflife and Counterstrike are possible using Wine.
For 2D-games, I'm always using the great pool of free software apt-get offers me (using Debian, with synaptic as frontend for apt-get).
If you want to have something for breaks at work etc., try FrozenBubble, I think it is pretty cool!
For the FPS mentioned you usually need a windows-CD, and a Linux-Installer (I have tried with Quake III and UT, and it worked like a charm).
If you have UT2003 for windows, you already have a Linux-version (installer included), unfortunately only for some GPUs and a limited number of soundcards IIRC.
Here some links:
http://www.lokigames.com/
http://www.linuxgames.com/
http://www.happypenguin.org/
http://www.tuxgames.com/
If you don't have the game for windows and want to buy it in order to install it under Linux, please consider buying a version for Linux from Loki etc. rather than buying the windows-version and downloading the Linux installer, that way you will support people who try to bring game-developers to support Linux.
PS.: Guess what type of games I prefer :D
PPS.: Since you have a SMP-machine, Quake III may be of special interest to you, because IIRC it is the first "real" game that supports SMP-machines!

Sorry, no clue...
I'm not much into games anymore, since I have very limited time at the moment, therefor I'm happy when UT and Quake III are running.
I searched Google, the only useful thing (but probably not very useful for you) I found was this:
http://ra.afraid.org/?s=extra&p=linuxra
Regarding UT, I have a Geforce 2 MX myself, and had absolutely no problem installing UT.
I have registered an(other) angelfire account and have uploaded the install-script I used, because I couldn't remember where I had downloaded it from.
If you want to give it another try:
http://www.angelfire.com/ut2/ut212/
At the moment I'm investigating in installing the latest version of Tactical Ops, but not the standalone version, rather the mod for UT.
The problem is, that for non-Gates-controlled OS'es the latest version is 2.2, and for Gates's products there is the version 3.15 available, which I would prefer...
But maybe I will just stick with the older version...

Maybe the traffic limit was exceeded?
Anyway, I found a link to the file:
ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/lokigames/installers/ut/ut-install-436.run
Good Luck!

They're not free, but many of the games over at GarageGames (http://www.garagegames.com/) run in Linux. Another non free game that I've gotten a lot of use out of is Neverwinter Nights. Though I'm still a little annoyed about their not giving us or the OS X users the toolkit.

I just have to mention OilWar (http://www.2ndpoint.fi/projektit/oilwar.html). Fun and simple. Probably not what you had in mind, though.

Isn't Bibble Bobble a clone of Bubble Bobble for PalmOS? Never played it but I love the series, including Parasol Stars.
Have you given MAME or SNES9x a try, they're great, hours of passive frustrating fun, turning into "I won't play that anymore."
Too bad there isn't a MAGICENGINE port for GNU/Linux. Now that would be awesome!

two words. Enemy Territory.
free, linux, online class-based team objective fps. based on the quake 3 engine, it's a spiritual successor to RTCW, but it's online only, and it pisses on RTCW's poor (IMO) online play. i play ET every day, and in the last month or two, some good home brew maps have appeared, you should really download it. it's about a 250MB download i think. go get it! :)

Yeah i will definitly look in to this, if its based on the quake 3 engine then it can't be bad.
