Resizing to achieve 4:3 AR. Zooming or shrinking?

I want to resize a VCD disk to convert it to DivX.the resolution is 352x288. In order to achieve the 4:3 aspect ratio, which choice is better?
1)resize to 384x288 with width zooming
2)resize to 352x264 with height shrinking
The 1st is used by a standalone VCD player to play the disk correctly
but the 2nd is proposed in doom9's guide.
Should I go for an even more zoomed res (480x360)?Would it give better results?

Or you can go the middle way and not resize at all. Use an AR-correcting player instead like ZoomPlayer or BSplayer and let it do the correcyion of the AR when you watch the video. At that point you will have to resize the video anyway unless you want to watch it in a window. Personally I do most of my 4:3 encodes that way as I watch it on a TV anyway, and the Matrox TV-out is optimized for DVD/VCD resolutions...
