processor usage

I remember there used to be an option in DivX 4 to set the maximum processor usage for the codec. I used to set it to 80% because I had some problems with overheating.

So, does anybody else think it would be a good idea to implement this feature in future builds?

If your computer is suffering from stability/heating problems,it is a good option to reduce the processor usage.But most of XviD users will not be in co-operation to this idea as many of them want to utilize 100% CPU to produce MPEG4 as quickly as possible.Even some are using Overclocked processors with special cooling methods.Thus from my point this feature is not necessary.

I would suggest simply buying a better CPU fan and heatsink if necessary, or more case fans (or a better case if your current one can't keep your CPU cool AND doesn't even have any room for more fans). Depending on what CPU you have you might get better results either with a more efficient fan or just better airflow in your case.

If your CPU gets drastically overheated just by bringing CPU usage to 100% your system probably has a cooling problem that should be fixed as soon as possible, so you permanently damage your hardware, CPU and otherwise.

Yeah go with a new fan and you'll be a lot happier ;)

Though you could set CPU priority in WinXP's (Win2k too?) task manager to 'Below Normal' or 'Low'. And what about VDub / VDubMods 'Processing thread priority' ?

Process priorities won't help since they wouldn't prevent 100% cpu usage ;)

I agree, the feature isn't really necessary, and I eventually did buy a better fan, but I still think the feature could be useful sometimes. Like, for example if you want to keep the codec's thread priority at normal, but still allow 20% of the processor's capacity for other applications.

Anyway, it was just a thought in case somebody forgot about the feature :)
