divx 5.1 compression

hey i'm sure this has allready been asked and talked about, i did a couple of searches but just couldn't really find anything exactly what i was wanting to find out about, could be more info on the divx forum not sure don't ever go there... anyway with the compression rates with divx 5.1 being so much lower then 5.0.5, like if i do a comp test on a movie with 5.0.5 i could get a percentage of 70%, but same setting and resolution with 5.1 it's more like 50%, so what would be the ideal setting you should aim for now, should it still be around the 70% at least above 60%, or can we lower that down to 50% and be getting the same quality turn out as 5.0.5 at 70%... if anyone could maybe give me a link to a forum thats specially been talking about this or give there oppinion on this would be great :D

I just came looking for this sort of comparison, because I was just looking at 2 movies I encoded recently: 1 (Animatrix) done with 5.05 and another (Solaris) done with 5.1. Each of these movies were done after configuring an 85% compressability check. (give or take a few percentiles. Between the 2, which were both in the 80s, the average would be approximately 85%). Both were encoded in precisely the same way with no filters or psy vis. One was simply using one codec, an the other was using the other codec.

I found, after watching each consecutively, that Animatrix was decidedly better. Static parts of scenes (ie.: walls, dooors, etc. in background scenes), Animatrix showed those as completely static, as they should be. That is the back ground wasn't moving, and neither were the colours. In Solaris, however, there was that telltale flickering of blocks of colour on static objects.

I feel that this may be an unfair comparison, since animation has static scenes throughout, and thus may contribute to a better encode overall, so I am planning to encode animatrix again with 5.1 and report my findings here. Hoever, considering the compressibility results, I think that 5.05 may be the way to go, but we will see..

Which Solaris is this? The original Russian movie, or the recent remake? The reason I ask is that Animatrix R1 is Anamorphic 16:9, and one of the 2 R1 Russian Solaris's is widescreen letterboxed 4:3. The Criterion version is anamorphic, but there's also a lousy version floating around. So be sure that the flickering isn't in the source. But the Soderbergh/Clooney remake is anamorphic. And as you said, it's kind of an apples to oranges comparison anyway.

The version was the anamorphic remake. The souce looked as clean as any other recent DVD I've seen. But as I said, I'm going to recode the animatrix, or at least one of the streams in there. I was thinking about "program". It has a lot of fast motion scenes, and panning static backgrounds. I'll be doing it exactly as I did with 5.05: no psy vis or smoothing filters. GMC was enabled. 4 passes, and of course with standard mode for 5.1. I'll be using approx 85% compressability for a target rather than a file size. Of couse I'll tell you how the file sizes compare as well, and perhaps find a place to post clips and link from here. Be patient with this please, though. I am pretty busy, but I'll get around to it.
