I would like to split the main VOB file without reauthoring. Is it possible?
24 Season 1 Disc 1 is authored this way. Is it actually a problem for DVD players if it has just one main VOB file above standard size?

I think it doesn't make any difference for DVD players.
However, if you want to split it, try renaming it VTS_01_001.VOB, open it with VOBEdit and click on Join Clips. I'm not sure it works (I've never tried) but since it joins VOBs smaller than 1 GB in 1 GB VOBs, maybe it splits bigger ones...
