Is there any way to use LAME as a full codec inside VirtualDub or other programs like that, which would allow for encoding to MP3 instream rather than having to extract the audio and compressing outside of VD? I'm using the Radium codec now, but it is CBR and I would like to get the advantages of VBR with LAME quality.
Is this possible?
I found this and thought it was close, but I have to build with it, and I dont' know how to do that.

the link you posted is exactly what you're looking for.
just install it and lame acm should appear in virtualdub's audio compression dialog.

afaik the major lame distributions already contain the lame acm codec which can be used in VDub. However, I doubt that VBR encoding will work.. I think the entire VBR MP3 needs to be around for proper multiplexing (and now I'm waiting for the programmers to correct me ;)

Very cool if that is what I'm looking for. No big deal if I can't do VBR, it isn't that big of a thing. I just want to get the best quality I can, and I know LAME is a leader in MP3 quality.
Do I still need to build the ACM stuff, or do I just right click the INF and install? Thanks for letting me know that ACM comes with full LAME. I"ve only downloaded the actuall .exe until now.

as far as I remember the installation is as simple as right clicking on the inf and selecting install. Give it a try ;)
Compiling the source by yourself is for the daring hackers out there..

Na, it isn't that complicated. There comes a Makefile with LAME for the Windows nmake. You just have to do something like nmake -f Makefile.vsc or so. You also need nasm in your path, but apart from that most people just don't have a VisualC++ compiler. By the way, my compile was terribly slow compared to the ICL compiles done by Mitiok and others.

Well, using what came with LAME the full thing turned out to be a bummer. I don't the the right stuff to do makefile to make LAMEacm.acm for just right-click and install on the INF, You can't get the DDK for free from Microsoft anymore, and I don't understand what I'm doing on Cygwin to download whatever I could use there.
I did end up using the software from the link I had and it worked to install it. I"ll play with it tonight.
*edit* Nevermind. If I download LAME from the right place (aka Doom9.org) and not from the developer's website, it works flawlessly. Thanks Doom9!
