I've been trying to follow the big 3 guide to back up "Signs: Special Edition.". I've tried 3 times in the past week and fail every time at the IfoUpdate stage. What is the exact procedure? This is what I'm doing after Scenarist finishes:
1. Copy all files from the VIDEO_TS folder that DIF4U created to a new folder.
2. Copy all the re-authored VOBs and Ifos from the Scenarist 0\VIDEO_TS directory to the new directory
3. Use IfoUpdate, putting the original ifo from teh DiF4U VIDEO_TS folder as "Original Ifo", and the newly authored Ifo in the output directory as the authored Ifo.

The problem is that the movie will play straight through just fine, but if you first select a scene from the menu, watch it for a few seconds, then go back to the menu and start the movie, instead of starting it, it jumps to a random scene (usually the one you just watched via the scene selection).

I'm using PowerDVD XP to do my testing, in Hard Disk mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Wait, so I put the ORIGINAL Ifos in the reauthored directory, then put them as the "original" Ifo, and the scenarist-generated Ifos as the "authored" Ifo? Do this procedure only for the VTS's that DIF4U demultiplexed?

Thanks for your quick reply!

check http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ra-guide.htm, under the "The next thing is copying all the files together to a common directory" part.

Thanks, I've read that part many, many times trying to figure it out, but to no avail. I understand that the original Ifos go in the final directory, but even if I put them as "Original Ifo", and the scenarist outputed Ifo as "authored" Ifo, I still get the same problem (Movie plays fine, unless you select a scene to watch, then go back to menu and restart movie from beginning).

In the case of Signs: Special Edition, there are 15 VTS on the DVD, but Scenarist only generates 10 VTS sets (the ones I'm reauthoring are 1, 7, 8, 9, and 10). So, I copy the ENTIRE contents of the VIDEO_TS folder (the one DIF4U generated) into the final output directory, then I copy the reauthored VOBS from the scenarist output into the final output directory (i.e., copy any VOBS from the Scenarist output which are VTS_01_XX, VTS_07_XX, VTS_08_XX, VTS_09_XX, VTS_10_XX). Then I run IfoUpdate.

I've redone the whole process twice already tonight and had the same problem both times. Do you see something that I'm doing wrong? I'm following the guide as best I can understand it. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate the help.

post the ifos...both the original (before and after ifoupdate) and the scenarist ones...(just the main movie VTS is good enough)

First you author the new files with Scenarist.

1 : After that you copy the directory "0" (that scenarist created)to another drive or subfolder. You could rename it, i always rename it something like this : Sings Final. Atleast the word final in it.

2 : Then you copy all the files, from the video_ts folder doitfast4u created, into the "0" dir or whatever you named it. If it asks you to overwrite something, then do so.

3 : start ifoupdate. Original IFO path is the one in the "0" dir, or whatever you called it. The authored ifo path is the ifo in the original "0" path scenarist created.

Update only the ifo's you reëncoded, so you don't overwrite the good ifo's with dummy ones.

I Hope it works now.

I don't want to add to the obvious confusion here but I want to give some clues here (or clear things up).

When using dif4u check the option copy unused vtses to video_ts folder. Result: folder with all untouched video, menus and original ifo files.

After compiling your script with scenarist you'll have 2 directories:

1)the \0\video_ts folder in which scenarist has created it's files
2)the video_ts folder from dif4u (in your demux directory).

Now when using ifoupdate point for the ORIGINAL ifo file to your dif4u video_ts folder and for your AUTHORED ifo file to the scenarist \0\video_ts folder.

That's all. No need for creating more directories and copying files.

After the ifoupdate or before doesn't matter copy your VOB files. For example VTS_01_1.vob, VTS_01_2.vob etc to your dif4u video_ts folder where all other files already are. So don't copy the scenarist ifo files.

OK, After quite a bit more testing and experimentation, I think I've got it figured out. This appears to be a bug in PowerDVD XP, because I've now duplicated it by mounting virtual discs of both Signs : Special Edition, and now Matrix Reloaded. Go into PowerDVD XP and select "Open DVD Files on Hard Disk" and navigate to your DVD (or virtual disc) and select the VIDEO_TS.IFO.
Start it up and then watch for a few minutes.
Then go back to the root menu, and go to scene selections and pick a scene and watch it for a minute.
Then go back to the root menu, and select "Play"
PowerDVD will take you to the last scene that you were just watching, and NOT the start of the movie!

What tipped me off is that after burning and watching in my standalone player this doesn't happen, and also the fact that this strange behavior happens in PowerDVD even when you're playing the original disc.

I can't explain the difference you're seeing between your stand-alone and PowerDVD, but what you are describing is actually a 'feature' of many DVDs. The play button on the menu isn't really a 'play from beginning' button, it's more of a 'resume' button. Not all DVDs are like this, but many of them are.

Wow, I would never have thought of it as a "feature." I wonder if there is some way to remove it via IfoEdit.

Maybe, though it's beyond me. I'd just get in the habit of going to the scene selection menu and choosing the first chapter.

Besides, how often do you watch part of a movie, jump to the menu, then want to watch the movie from the beginning again (except during testing of course)?

Good point. I'm just glad that I've finally gotten the "big 3" backup process down. :)
