Hope you don't mind my deleting this post...

I read the post twice - now can I ask you a very simple question: what is that you want ? :)

Um.. yeah.. I just read it again too. Guess I sould have waited to post that. Sorry.

This is what I was saying (or trying to say): If you follow the link above (in the original post) (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52163&perpage=20&pagenumber=2) , it describes a technique that I have found very useful (look at the 3rd post on the page). I use it with all of my encodes. However in order to employ it, I need to set the first pass settings for divx every time I set up a dvd to encode. Gknot won't save 1 pass quality based for a fist pass setting as a default. I need to set it every time. So what I was wondering was how about allowing the user to save a 1-pass quality based for the first pass as a default codec setting on the options tab?

Again sorry about the first post there. THAT's somewhat embarrassing.

Oh, now I see. Actually the way it's done in GK: defaults are always saved as you see them (afair). So that saving is fine. But if you don't specify them on Encode window then GK get defaults and puts the pass, logs, bitrate etc for the actual encoding. So I guess I can remove setting the pass (which is still a bit dangerous for newbies though)...

That was amuzing :) Very long, but non-informative...

Hello.

Sorry it took awhile to respond to this. I wanted to try it out first.

Actually, I'm finding that I still have to specify 1 pass quality based from the encode window. I've deleted the registry keys, and set the defaults in the options tab again, but still the multipass first pass comes up when clicking first pass setting in the encode window.

I've run the 0.28.6.1 update (aftter uninstalling 0.28.5 and installing the 28.6.1 rip pak). I'm not sure what else to try.

On a side note, I look forward to making use of the last pass setting option when the next official divx release is out.. assuming that it's as fast as they are claiming it will be! :)

That's intended. If you set 1 pass on defaults, then do NOT set anything on the encode window and defaults will be picked up as it is.
This way you can do what you want with defaults and newbies will not screw their encodes...

Okay, thanks for the info. I do have another question. Is there somewhere in the log files perhaps that I can check what method was used for the 1st pass setting? I think I remeber someone else asking this question at another time, but I'm sorry, I couldn't find that particular post. I can't even remember what the subject of that post was. I can usually tell by the projected file size in the status window of vdubmod, but it would be useful if I could check elsewhere, as I am not around my pc much of the time after I set up an encode.

have a look at firstpass.settings in the output dir after you added the job. Then find the line:

"VBR Mode"=dword:00000002

mode 2 - first pass of Nth pass
mode 3 - Nth pass
mode 1 - quality based 1 pass
