After reading much about that issue lately, I came to realize that it doesn't really matter if I convert my AVI file to VCD or SVCD, because there is no DVD player which is capable of a multi-channel output from a VCD/SVCD.
If that is true, what is the point in making SVCD which requires 3-4 CD'S per movie, when I can just make a regular 2-channeled VCD from 1-2 CD'S ???

If playing multi-channel sound in a standard home-theater DVD player possible, I would like to get a refernce to the appropriate guide to converting an AVI file to MPG with multi-channel sound.

Thank you

hi,
actually from what i've heard (never tried it though) you can create multichannel mp2 audio files to mux into SVCDs. honestly i do not know about player compatibility though...

point is, if it makes sense to even include the 5.1 sound in an SVCD... it will take quite some space, most likely you'll need an extra CD and i doubt that the quality improvement is good enough to justify the effort...

hmmm... what do you mean here? why don't you just make a standard SVCD with 2 channel mp2 sound. the quality will be quite a bit higher than with a VCD, but you won't need any more CDs.

If your avi source is of high quality, you will easily see the advantage of svcd in terms of video quality. Other reasons for svcd include selectable subtitle support and multiple audio tracks. You might want to try a dvd conversion to vcd and svcd to find the justification for svcd.

As for mpeg 5.1 multichannel, read this link: http://hypercubemx.free.fr/html/how_to_make_5_1__svcd.html . Haven't tried this myself, as my hardware doesn't support mpeg multichannel.

NB: dvd2svcd includes mpeg multichannel support.
