View Full Version : Need VFW decoder for H.263 files

I have been doing real time capture using the amazingly good ffvfw mpeg4 codec that uses the H263 fourCC.
Problem is that I can’t edit this in Vdub as it requires a VFW H.263 decoder.
Does anyone know of a suitable decoder?
I tried changing the fourCC to Dixv and Xvid but that did not work.

why are you using "H.263" in ffvfw?
the first, "MPEG 4" option is the best, and is indeed amazingly good. the fourCC should be FVFW with it (if it hasn't changed by now), and things like ffdshow can decode it.

IvS,
My stupid mistake. I rechecked and I am using MPEG 4 with FVFW fourCC.I must have changed the fourCC to H263 when trying to get it to work in VDub.
I have no problems playing the encoded video in Zoom Player using ffdshow to decode.
But ffdshow is not used in VirtualDub. It needs a VFW decoder to work.
So I need a VFW decoder for FVFW.

If there is no way to edit FVFW in VDub can anyone recommend another encoding option that can be edited/cut without re encoding (Direct Stream Copy).
I have not found anything to match FVFW quality for real time capture at Quality 95% encodes.
Encoding PAL 720x576 it gives original quality at about 2000kbs with MP3 sound.
Nothing else I have tried can compete. (Divx, Xvid etc)

Weird, ffvfw should handle anything with a FVFW fourcc when it comes to vfw. If it's compliant mpeg 4, then changing the fourcc to xvid or divx probably would work.

OK now I feel like a dumb bunny.
I just tested a ffvfw encoded file on my laptop and it works fine in VDub.
Must be something screwed up on my main PC.
I will reinstall and retest now that I know it can work.
I do love the speed and outstanding quality of ffvfw Mpeg 4 encoder. It seems to be ignored by most people. They don’t know what they are missing.

I don't have ffvfw installed here - but may it possuble to configure ffvfw so that is no longer registered to handle the FVFW FourCC? I guess that this FourCC was not "disableable" :D

Thanks LigH.
I have FVFW working in Virtual Dub now.
H263 decoding in VDub still does not work but I dont care as FVFW is better.
I forgot that I used H263+ to do some captures (the rest were FVFW format)and then could not edit it in VDub.
Thats why I made the mistake with my original post about not being able to edit H263 files. I can recapture the video that is in H263 so it does not matter now.
FVFW is working great for capture. Its the best Mpeg4 codec for high bit rate capture that I have used. Definately better then Divx and Xvid.

You may search the web for an "X.263" decoder; a russian "freeware video codecs" page (http://mirror01.users.i.com.ua/~video/index.htm) once had one for download, but it seems to be down now (hope it will resurrect one day).
