Hi,

I'm having some doubts regarding the aspect ratio and need your expert thoughts :)

Here are some things you should know:

Movie Length: 1:28:22
CDs I'm aming for the rip: 1
Audio: 128kbps (MP3 VBR)
Input Resolution: PAL
Input Pixel Aspect Ratio: 16:9
W-Modul/H-Modul: 16

I clicked the the auto crop button that choosed Smart Crop All.

If I go for a more usual resolution like 640xXXX i have an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and an aspect error of -0.3 and the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) is 0.222 but if I move the lider in GK to a resolution like 672xXXX i have an aspect ratio of 2.33:1 and an aspect error of 0.0 and the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) is 0.200.

So, my question here is: what resolution would you choose? I always thought that the closest you get to 0.0 in the aspect error the best, so I encoded this movie with a resolution of 672xXXX and the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) as not below 0.17 so the final quality should be good (and it is). But I read somewhere that DVDs aspect ratios are only 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 (and a few others, can't remember wich) and the one I ripped had one of 2.33:1, this may also be one of those aspect ratios of dvd or not (I don't know) but another question is. Should we really take that into account or shouldn't we look at the final aspect ratio as long as we stay close to 0.0 and if we can make it 0.0 exactly in the aspect error and the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) has an acceptable value (according to doom9's riping guide) we should encode it that way?

Hi-

B/PF alone is no guarantee of good results (although it seems to have worked in your case). It is a guide to set the resolution before running the Compression Test. After getting the results, use the percentage to guide you for your final resolution.

I always thought that the closest you get to 0.0 in the aspect error the best

I wouldn't worry too much about choosing a resolution based entirely on 0.0% AR Error. Both resolutions are fine. Read about the first 18 inches of this Sticky (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42708).

...shouldn't we look at the final aspect ratio as long as we stay close to 0.0...

Since a 2.35:1 movie may not be truly 2.35:1 to begin with, and since when cropping, you not only crop away the black bars, but maybe a few pixels of the video also, to achieve low Aspect Error, then the important thing to watch for is not the final Aspect Ratio, but the final Aspect Error.

os i have done nothing wrong right? and each of the resolutions will be fine cuz the human eyey won't detect any differences between them despite if i go for a lower res an impromevent in quality may or may not be seen...
