View Full Version : Scenarist error at DVD authoring stage of DVD2SVCD

OK, let me preface by saying that I've searched the forum for "dvd2svcd scenarist"(no quotes in search) and have found a similar thread that went in a different direction. It did not answer the main question, as far as I can see, but I'm a newb at this stuff.
When DVD2SVCD gets to Scenarist, it simply halts, and either (a)hangs for a while or (b)gives a "Scenarist Falied!" notice. I will always get (b), but only sometimes will it hang.
Here is the DVD2SVCD log file:

Scenarist Failed!
When DVD2SVCD opens Scenarist, I get a whole mess of stuff in the 'import' tab of Scenarist, and then the "OK" button pops up. The "OK" button will disappear after a while(or I can click it, I've tried both ways) and then nothing will happen. I can sit here for eternity, and Scenarist wont do a darn thing. I even checked my TM to see if it was using CPU time and doing background stuff, but nada. Now, I THINK that Scenarist is supposed to Mux the stuff, so I went ahead and tried to do that manually, and here is the error I got:
Info Starting Multiplex Pulldown_Encoded_Video_NT_1 (1 / 1)
Info Multiplexing VOB Main Stream
Warning Total bitrate too HIGH. Audio(1) PTS(70617) is less than SCR(70643) (around 00:00:00:23).
Error dvd_mux : DoMux Multiplexing Error
Error Terminated Multiplexing (movie0.scn-Pulldown_Encoded_Video_NT_1_t.vob).
Error Total bitrate is too HIGH. Please reduce the stream bitrate or the number of stream.
Error Multiplex is failed.
Error Multiplexer failed (Pulldown_Encoded_Video_NT_1)
Info Finished Multiplex - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s)
Any help would be much appreciated!
QUICK EDIT: My bit rate in DVD2SVCD is set to 8000, since I heard that's the highest Scenarist will accept. I've seen a bunch of threads using 8500, but I wanted to be safe.

It was the version I got from one of the links on the dvd2dvd.org homepage... it was one revision earlier... build 2 instead of build 3. I'll try redoing stuff, and let you know if it worked(I'm sure it will). Sorry about the trouble!

It may or may not help, but that is what d2s needs to know. And, btw, it is no trouble at all. You asked a good question and did a proper question post, so it is always a pleasure to try to help.

set your max to 8500 ...default is 9000
and yes you must start over from the video encoding part.

I'm getting similar errors whenever I set the max bitrate higher than 7000 ...
then scenraist will pop out of existence with an "could not write to memory error msg".
I have now just noticed thought that while scenarist is importing (with max bitrate set to 7500, I seem to be getting errors about mismatched durations?)

even after these warnings scenarist will start doing its thing but then the error mentioned above 'could not write to memory' happens.
I'm using the build 2 , but I'll try again tonight with the latest build3. Again using a bitrate >7000 so I'll cross my fingers.
Every time I choose bitrate of max 7000 the dvd2dvd process works perfectly. So I keep thinking in that direction.
and to make this complete, I'll also post my dvd2svcd log file:

I have already bucked up nearly 20 movies using DVD2DVD (dvd2svcd 1.2.1 b3 ) , but only recently I get the same as Patjen and Junari scenarist errors , without any prior
change in settings:
Warning This Video [ C:\Program files\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL.mpv ] has different duration.
Error The scene ( Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL-t, Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL-t-s_28 ) timecode ( 02:28:34;09 ) is bigger than video duration.
Error Importing failed
Then during GENERATING DVD FILES scenarist stops ALWAYS AT 33% ...
The movie that was buckimg up , is GLADIATOR.
The same occured in THE TETENBAUMS movie.

Is it a problem of max bitrate (< 8500) ?
But why only these movies ?
Thanking in advance for any help,

The message windows says:
Total bitrate too HIGH!
That can only mean you have to decrease the maximum bitrate I suppose!

If you get this message inside scenarist window, it means that this scene is actually a still frame, that is displayed for 24 frames and should be treated as a still frame, not a video stream.
This creates problems in scenarist and interrupts the creation of DVD files.
SOLUTION
To overcome this problem:
a.Open the already created scenarist document, normally called" movie0 "(it will be found in the directory ,where all files during DVD2SVCD process are created ,normally called" Movie").
b.Press tab "Track Editor" ,then Tracks and then Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL-t ,and you will get all the scenes (=chapters) of the movie ,in my case 28.
If the scene with error is the last one,for me the( Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL-t-s_28) DELETE IT (RIGHT CLICK and CLEAR).
It is propably a still frame at the end of END credits.
c.Press tab "Layout Editor" , go in step 3 tick "Create DVD Video" (and "Create Disk Image" if you want also the discimage file) and then press "Start".
Your DVD files will be created smoothly....
This way I succeded with two movies ,GLADIATOR and ROYAL TETENBAUMS.

dimirass - I just happened to see you are setting overscan on DVD output. With this setting you are losing 4% of your left/right picture.

You are right.Actually I used FACAR "plug in" without any changes in settings,as I don't feel very confident in doing so...
Does this also apply in overscanV=0.4?
IF you have any suggestions for frameserving e.g. bilinear vs bicubic please do so..
thanx

Scenarist step fails with no apparent error messages. Stops at Generating DVD-Video files (32%). I did this three times with exact results and failure at same place. Following is the Scenarist log, D2SRoba log, and DVD2DVD log.
I searched pretty hard looking for the problem on the forum and did not find a hit. I'm out of ideas.

During another test of the failed Scenarist run, I discovered this error in the log in the Import tab.
Another snippet from the multiplex.log in the DVD-Mux dir. Shows odd sequence of commands, like it got cut off. Likely related to the failed to paste error.

It is propably a still frame at the end of END credits.
c.Press tab "Layout Editor" , go in step 3 tick "Create DVD Video" (and "Create Disk Image" if you want also the discimage file) and then press "Start".

dimirass... thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I just tried this solution and it fixed the Scenarist problem I had with "Daddy and Them"... evidently it was 'seeing' the last second (which was a totally black screen) of the film as a 'still'. I am going to now try this with the last couple of other 'failed' movies. I just got through reviewing them and they also end with about a second's worth of black screen. If this fixes those also, I will, in the future, use DVDshrink to cut-out the 'black scenes' first before starting DVD2SVCD and going to bed.
(BTW, I always use a bitrate of 9000.)

I noticed that in DVDShrink you don't have to manually cut off seconds. You can cut off the still picture chapter and the end by selecting another chapter to end your rip with. DBDShrink shows the chapters, in my case 29 (Gladiator), BUT the DVD should contain only 28 chapters according to the cover. So now I cut off the last chapter which is very easy in DVDShrink using the Start-End option.
When done I will run it through DVD2SVCD and see what happens. I will report my results here.
One more thing....why would scenarist quit working at 33%-34% if the problem is in the last second of the rip?

I solved my problem by deleting the last chapter which was 1 or 2 seconds. You can check if you have a problem DVD at hand by checking the number of chapters on the cover/booklet and compare them with the chapters shown by ifoedit. The problem DVDs have an extra chapter of a couple of seconds. You can rip your DVD with DVDShrink without any compression. Use the Start/End option to copy it all without the last chapter. Once the files or on your PC, you can go on with DVD2SVCD like you always do. Thanks dimirass and others who put me on the right track. Good luck all with your rips!
