if im encoding a dvd from and avi, is there any point increasing the average/max bitrates much higher than the total bitrates found via gspot?

hi and welcome to the forum!

yes, you have to increase the bitrate significantly, as mpeg2 video (DVD) needs a much higher bitrate than mpeg4 (most avis)

the max bitrate for mpeg2 video should be around 9000 kbit, the min can be as low as 500, the average bitrate depends on the amount of data you have aswell as how much data you want to fit onto a DVD... personally I consider an avg bitrate of 2500kbit low!

PS: all this is written assuming that you are planning on putting the movies in DVD standalone compliant formats to the DVD, and do not use the DVD+/-R as a large storage media for avis... if you intend to do the latter, just leave the avis as they are!

wow, that was fast! :)

im still kinda confused. lets say my avi has an average bit rate of 900 for video and 128 for audio. wouldnt a 2500 average for encoding (and yes, im trying to put this avi into a dvd to play in a standalone) the dvd be sufficient? i mean, would forcing a higher average for the dvd produce any better quality even if the source's average is limited?

well it's like this! compared to the avi, you cannot improve the quality no matter how high you turn up the bitrate. the only thing you can change by using a higher bitrate is to reduce the loss of quality.

also it pretty much depends on the source , if it is a dark movie, or maybe has a lot of fast action scenes in it.

anyway, the only real way for you to find out is to try. make a test encode, check the results, if you like them, keep it, if you do not like them, do another encode.

u can use CCE and encode it at OVR (one pass variable encoding) with a min of 500 and a max of 9000. This way u will end up with the best quality your video may reach and the smallest size possible in quality factor 50.
