I have a Sony DRU-510a with firmware 1.0B. I've had no problems burning Memorex 1x-2x DVD-R DVDs made by "CMCMAG.".
Nor have I had any problems with Memorex DVD+R discs (I've tested Memorex DVD+R discs made by "MPOMEDIA001" and "RICOHJPNR01")

Today I bought a bunch of 10-packs (spindles) of 1x-4x Memorex ("Print - For use with inkjet printers") DVD-R, based on my earlier good experience with the brand, and the manufacturer ID is "CMCMAG.AF1". Of those, say, every third is a coaster. I can actually tell they won't burn well just by doing a test burn in Nero.

How common is this? Could a firmware upgrade solve the problem or does the fact that some discs burn well while others don't (from the same spindle) mean the DVDs are badly manufactured?

I'd say their qc is sloppy ... or rather, they allow for a rather (too) wide quality range. After manufacturing, specialized scanning devices are doing the qc and identifying bad discs.
What constitutes a bad disc can of course be fine-tuned ...

I went back to the shop with the DVD-Rs and had planned to be forced to explain in detail *why* the discs didn't work (CMC is a crappy manufacturer, etc).
I wanted to replace the Memorex DVD-Rs with Memorex DVD+R (made by RICOHJPNR01) that the shop also had on sale, and which have worked fine for me.
When asked why I returned the discs, I simply said they didn't work and expected to be questioned further. But the clerk took me for an idiot and replied that since the DVD+ discs I wanted in return worked, my burner couldn't burn DVD-R, only DVD+R.
I kept my mouth shut, but laughed to myself on my way home.

What do you guys normally say when you return media?
Do you return burned discs too?

I've never had anyone question me as to why I was bringing them back because, before they can ask, I always immediately say, "these don't work with my drive", and then just let them take the problem any way they take want to, and let me have a refund or exchange.

But I'm always ready to give them the full details as to WHY. And confuse the hell out of them with manufacture ID's and their quality control problems, smooth disk edges, error codes, etc... :D

I bring all the disks back normally because usually the "bad" disk can't be read anyway, so I figure the test data I burned is unreadable and safe from prying/curious eyes.
