I converted futurama s2 to vcd, then thought i would burn it to dvd with menus etc!I used tmpg dvd author, it took about an 1hr then i had to burn it.The results were good, nice enough, especially with all 19 episodes on one dvdr.
But after it was done,it then came to my attention-did tmpg dvd author re-encode my already perfectly dvd complaint file?I now use main concept to convert my movies using its dvd template - but when burning with roxio again it re-encoded the movie!
Is there a program that will allow me use movies that i have created without re-encoding them and also allow the creation of some simple menu's etc?
Thanks in advance

i really should have given more details sorry, long day. Main concept encodeds the video at 720x480 and i changed a few settings in the bit rate tab so that i would make the files small enough to fit on a dvdr
hope thats enough info
thanks again guys

It is my understanding You have to rewrite the video header on a vcd. Could be wrong on that. You deffinitly have to re-sample the audio from vcd cpmpliant 44.100 to dvd spec 48000. Try dvdpatcher availible on the doom9 site for the video header.
19 episodes on one disk:confused:   any time I go for more than six I start to get too many artifacts.

Tmpg Dvd Author doesn't reencode your video files, but it does convert the audio part of it if it's not the proper format.

Cheers for replying, yeah i knew about the audio needing to be 48000 instead of the 441000, just wanted to make my dvdr's the best possible quality! If you use main concept to make the vcds (or whatever ur favourite encoder is) then use that tmpg dvd author the results are pretty good!It aint no dvd quality but 19 episodes on 1 disk-im doing the same with series 1 and family guy!

Again thanks for replying mate.So if my audio is already at 48000 then it wont touch either video or audio? Is there any otehr programs that do this as the menu creation aint to good-but otherwise not bad!Just prefered the "look" that comes out when roxio!
Whats steps do you take when converting a few dvdrips (Divx) to dvdr?
cheers again

If the the divx has vbr mp3, first you use a audio program to make a wav file with the proper attributes(I normally use goldwave myself). Then just run the video through tmpgenc to get a m2v file. Then depending on the authoring program your using, may have to convert the wav file again first. Personally I use Vegas4 and make an ac3 file and then author with scenarist. Bottom line is that there are many ways to accomplish the task at hand, whatever works best for you then go that route. Or you could you besweet for the audio part of it, like i said many ways to do it.

My case is a bit different. What I dont understant is
why is it that Roxie re-encodes some things?
I gave it a SVCD and it thought it was a DVD mpeg.
What's up with that?
Ok here is whats new. Plextor 708A and a newly installed
Roxie that came bundled with the drive.
The SVCD plays perfect when burner to a CDR then played
in a stand alone DVD player.
However when I told roxie to load the file when it came
time to burn the beast. It took quite a bit of time.
I had figured maybe it was creating the data files for the
video directory stuff.
Ok so far ok fine....
When it got done with the thing I went ahead and burned the
DVD/RW and stuck it in the stand alone player.
The audio was way out of synce versus the source material.
Also one 43 minute show all of a sudden wa sucking up 2.5
gigs of the DVD space !
This is not what I bought a DVD recorder for. I don't like
the idea of one DVD per 43 minute show.
Yes I bought some TV show DVD's and am experimenting with the
Plextor 708A internal.
The SVCD video rate was 2150 and the audio rate was 224 cbr
before Roxio did it's thing.
I am not complaining about the time here but eeek... 1 43 minute
show per DVD ?
What am I missing here?
Am I new at this. definetly... Am I lurking in guides. Yes I am.
Some guides confuse me a bit because I would like to move some
of my backed up shows to another DVD for personal use here.
Thoughts ?

Harborside,
first off, svcd material is technically not dvd compliant (wrong resolution, audio is 44.1 kHz instead of 48), that's why many authoring programs refuse to accept it "as is".
Depending on the package, audio/and or video will be reencoded (sorry, I don't have the package you used).
However, many standalones will play back svcd material from a dvd, provided the audio is resampled. For a guide, check doom9's guide on SVCD -> DVD±R (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/svcd2dvdr.htm).
