What is the benefit of converting an avi file to mpeg to burn it as a vcd ?

Some converting software offer the choice to convert avi to vcd/svcd etc to burn to cd, using tools like nero this seems pointless, is it ?

is it better to encode an mpeg to vcd rather than an avi file ?

i posted a while ago about having problems with avi files, splitting them into 2 the 2nd part has the sound about 5-10 seconds in front of video, would converting the file to mpeg from avi sort this ?

There is none, you lose quality when you convert from one format to another. The thing with VCD's is that your source video must be in MPEG format in order to watch it on your standalone player.

This is usefull for the lazy person that doesn't want to encode there movies into MPEG manualy. Note that SVCD is MPEG2(not a free plugin in nero) and VCD is MPEG1.

You don't convert an MPEG to VCD. Rather you burn it to CD which is then refered to as a VCD. And like I said earlier, everytime you re-encode to a different format you lose quality, so stick with the original if you can.

It might help with the splittig since MPEG is different from avi.

But then you risk the chance of splitting the movie into 3 CD's instead of 2. MPEG normally requires 10MB per Minute of video, so you can have up to 80mins per disk. If your movie is lets say 200 Mins, it would be split in 3 parts. Two 80 minute parts and one 40 minute part. But when you split an avi that's 200Min and is 1400MB, you get two parts that are each 700MB and the time for each part should be ~100min. This is bad quallity imo, but it can be done at low resolutions. This is assuming you movie is over 160mins.
