On the main site, under >> DVD Basics >Aspect Ratios Explained (http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm), I noticed this statement:
Formats like VCD and SVCD... have a DAR flag (4:3 or 16:9, where the latter won't work properly on all known players).
Firstly, I was under the impression that VCD (MPEG-1) couldn't have a 16:9 DAR flag, but I'm no expert. But that's another issue.

Anyway, my question is about SVCD only. What does "won't work properly" in the above quote mean? DVD2SVCD backups encoded at 16:9, instead of the usual "4:3 with borders added" play fine on my standalone player and look better than an equivalent letterboxed version. I'm interested to hear other peoples experience.

If you voted options 1 or 2, I would be interested to know if you are able to play an SVCD where the video is encoded as 16:9 anamorphic but given a DAR flag of 4:3, i.e. if you can manually set your TV to 16:9 mode.

If your player can play SVCD then you can always make an SVCD with an anamorpic picture but using 4:3 aspect ratio flag. It's just a matter of rezising anamorphically. Then just switch mode on your TV to 16:9.
