View Full Version : mono or stereo ?

I sometimes find it hard to distinguish a mono source from a stereo source.

For example, some movies, when you extract the ac3, have for example "AC3 T01 2_0ch 192Kbps DELAY 0ms" as filename. But I have noticed some of those movies have mono sound (older ones), but still the filename says 2_0 (which means stereo right) ?

So is there a way to be sure ? Like checking your dvd, or one of the vobs, or the ac3? And if this is possible, which program should I use ?

Well, I hope this is clear enough

Thanks in advance...

Back cover of the jacket tells you all, but your right about DVD2AVI giving mono files a 2_0ch filename.

Virtual Dub Mod can give information of ur audio tracks too.Just open *.vob with VDM and choose "File Information" from 'File' Tab.If u have more than 1 track u have to select which ac3 stream.(a window will appear asking which ac3 stream....).

The problem can be that though these audio tracks DO have 2 channels, the channels are exactly the same and therefor you have mono sound. I used to use LAME to encode and check this with the mid-side stereo information. Now that BeSweet is around, it doesn't show this information, but you can view it later using EncSpot, so that's what I'd do. If it turns out that your file is mostly ms frames, you probably have a mono source, and your encode would benefit from a mono encoding over a joint stereo encoding(i wrote a thread about this quite a while ago).

If you have Cool Edit, try selecting "Transform / Amplitude / Channel Mixer", and run the "Vocal Cut" preset. (This inverts one channel and mixes it 50/50 with the other channel.) If the result is silence (or nearly so), then your 2-channel source was really mono.
