Questoins about TV in UK or...........

Since i can't findany other fourm that is specfic for TV. ( And i don't expect there is one either ) So i decided to ask in Doom9. Where many video expert are here.

In UK most shops are now selling Widescreen TV. While this is ok for DVD; i don't understand the purpose for widescreen other that that. Will i have distorted images when i use a widescreen with a console like ps2 or gamecube??

And the other thing i don't understand is that isn't the TV signal produced is a 4:3 image. So when i view it on a wide screen 16:9 wouldn't that means the TV has to add some sort of filter to make it to 16:9 screen??

And the funny thing is........ i couldn't tell any image quality difference on a 16:9 and 4:3 when watching TV... ( may be general qulaity on TV is poor anyway.. )

And what is Nicam doing in UK?? I don't undertsnad what is Nicam doing in UK?? I mean in Singorpore you may need it since people are Bylingal.......... but what is it doing in UK?? ( Because if i didn't find much use to it than i could buy a cheaper tele )

And finally is TV size measure in viewable area like LCD or like CRT monitor?

Digital TV can also be widescreen. And almost all 16:9 TV's have 4:3 modes where they add black bars to the side of the 4:3 picture when showing it...

This will slightly deteriorate the picture, yes.

Sounds much better than the A2, the amplitude modulated analogue audio used in Germany.
And finally is TV size measure in viewable area like LCD or like CRT monitor? CRT TV's use CRT measuring, LCD/Plasma TV's use LCD measuring.
