View Full Version : Vote for a Matroska Logo!!

With the Matroska (http://www.matroska.org) tools all getting very mature and well test, it is finally time to decide on an official logo. Several months ago, the logos were mostly narrowed down to three basic designs, but the team was divided on which to choose. So, the Matroska team would like to hear from everyone at Doom9, which logo you like the most.
Keep in mind some of the requirements for a logo:
* Must be able to be displayed in black and white for silkscreening on things such as a DVD player.
* Must not contain gradients as it looks bad most of the time and is hard to reproduce. "Gradient = slowly transitioning from one color to another."
* It must easily fit in a square, for use in icons and such.
* Must be easily distinguishable. IE, if it looks like the McDonalds big yellow "M", that is no good.
* It should not violate any laws. If it looks like another trademarked logo, its no good.
* Simplicity is good.
Without further wait, here it is (http://matroska.corecodec.org/logo/logos.html).

None of them look good, although the third one could almost work, keep trying.

The third one since it actually says Matroska and it holds true to the basic premise behind the format (nesing dolls and extensibility). A logo whithout the name would not be very useful for people unfamiliar with the format.

Yes, I think the same thing, the name needs spreading.
The logo only solution its for well known standards, I think.

The first logo of 3Dolls looked beautiful in the DVD player view. And name of the format makes it good => Other Audio/Video/disc Logos also had a name on it...

Maybe adding "Matroska" to the cosmic logo would be ideal. I voted for Cosmic.

The pain... THE PAIN!!
(I voted for "make the pain stop", but if this vote comes to a draw between two of the logos (same amount of votes), then count mine for the dolls. It's the one that actually makes sense and looks rather nice.)

Here are two different quick treatments of the cosmic logo. There are some other things that can be done as well to turn it into a more identifiable and complete logo.

I don't really like any of the three.
but I'd like to know why on earth in the last one "matroska" is written in Japanese's katakana ??
it is a Russian word, so write it in cyrilic, as on the official webpage !! ("ìàòð¸øêà". something more like "matrioshka")

Well, I voted for the Dolls, because it displays the product name!
However, I've always liked the 'Cosmic' logo. So..... overall I prefer Neo Neko creations!
Sorry Pamel

You claim to have humor cause you included something he already made on that page? Sounds kinda cheap ;).

Like I said previously. In my opinion it's better to stick with the original logo and display the products name. Dont go all 'Prince' on us!
Please stick with one name and one way to present that name. Branding is very important!
When was the last time you saw any electrical manufacturer present their name in different ways to suit regions or countries?

Neo Neko's creations are by far the best. Those + cyrillic text would be the definite winner or maybe without the borders.

[x] dolls (first one)
about the "cosmic":
cosmic? hu? i just see some strange and confusing circles and dots... usually i have a good abitliy of seeing those things spatial (=räumliches sehen?) - i know this logo since matroska started, but i cant decipher it.
so it should be cosmic, some kind of planets or what? planets->earth->humans->spare-time->multimedia->codecs->matroska => no
but i like (the first of) the dolls: an easy logo, and - thats the most important thing about it - its inventive.
doll-in-a-doll->матрёшка->matroska => yes
btw: i like the 1st one, cause the 2nd looks like "hula hoop"

A clear vote for number 3. I like its simplicity. That's a logo you memorize with one look. And somehow it reminds me of the DVD logo. Maybe a little far fetched, but that was the first thought that came into my mind. I'm sure they would look nice next to each other.
Why not the others?
Number 2 is simply a pain in the eyes. If you don't know already what it stands for you won't find out. It's illegible without a little thinking about it. And - considering the average user/customer - who does that?
Number 1. Sure, it looks sort of cool, but why does everything have to have some kind of outer space logo? Imo when a logo comes in some way from a real world thing that thing should somehow be connected with the product. Where is the connection between Matroska and outer space? So better stay completely abstract.
@hofmetzger: Looks a little like Saturn with the rings and moons to me.
P.S.: One additional thought about dolls: Stonehenge ... hm ... don't ask me why ... :)

IMO it's very easy to understand the true meaning of the cosmic logo, it means:
Infinity>Endless>Eternity, I think it describes matroska ultimate goals quite precisely.
Another very nice emblem of eternity would be the 'snake swallowing its own tail' in ancient Egypt mythology, too bad it's already taken.:D
Voted Cosmic.

@neo neko: my eyes hurt. bad. :D
hehe
i voted for the dolls.
different choice of font and it'd be verr nice. the cosmic one didn't say enough aboot the format (though it did say something, which is better than just 4 letters also in a bad font:))
cyrillic characters have a really nice look to them. i think if a logo were made with something like a russian constructivist bent to it, it'd be lovely (and would suit the current designs of high-end DVD players). i love constructivist designs.
(okay, i think i've blown my cover - i'm actually a graphic/multimedia artist who spends too much time playing with video :))
yeah, so if the dolls got some constructivist treatment and the font was changed (for a logo to fit on a DVD-player, you'll be thinking of simply making the font legible before anything else - a lot of people can't read small text)

I simple idea for those designing the logos:
Buil on the idea of the doll inside a doll. An ad infinitum logo. It doesn't need to be a doll, though...

Here is my first rude vision: http://www.nic.fi/~lhahne/logo.png Note! IE screws the background color up. It should be transparent. Ie auto resize also makes it look ugly.
Edit: Here is also a doll version. http://www.nic.fi/~lhahne/logo-dolls.png
Atamido
10th October 2003, 22:03
@Latexxx: If you save the PNG as an 8-bit PNG, then IE will show the background as transparent. And, given the number of colors you are using, you shouldn't lose anything.
Funny that the only people that like the MKVA logo are people that spend time in the IRC channel. Perhaps there is some correlation between IRC and lack of taste?

I'd call it correlation between being on irc.corecodec.com (out of anything other than necessity ;)) and having bad taste. :D

First of all, i think they are good for website-layout, but far too big for a logo on a hardwareplayer or a cd-cover.
Then i think the choise using "matroska" as sinplification of the original name is a good decision, its much easier to read/write/remember for the most users out there.
[not serious] what about the logo in my avatar

some kind of retro ;) I know what you mean,
but actually, for real (native) Russian ppl, this word in cyrillic characters could be justfunny, because it would mean something comletely different than multimedia.
why? (http://ld-anime.faireal.net/guide/jargon.matroska-en)
for general ppl, "Matroska" in latin alphabet should be best, ithink

It is only slightly wider than "dolby digital"-logo in my dvd player and it's definately smaller than "TruSurround Srs" that is also printed on my Philips dvd-722.

I voted for the dolls, simple and good. And I'd like to talk people out of the idea to write matroska in cyrillic letters! In the non-russian part of the world only few people could read it, and wouldn't know what to make of it. Just "matroska" would be perfect.

Well upon that explanation of what matroska means in russian perhaps we should go with the doll logo only have one of them wearing the blue striped sailor shirt and looking a little tipsy. That is if we are gonna use crylic with the name. :D A matreshka wearing a matroska. :P

Frankly, the MKVA logo is pretty terrible as it's not overly distinctive, and the first time I saw it, I wasted brain cycles trying to read the lettering rather than committing the image to memory.
Will the logo be expected to double as an icon? The dolls based images (Marlena's) are nice and simple but don't look like they'd scale down well.

I think the result is quite clear. The Doll is a winner.
Now we need to polish it and decide for possible variations (font used, text/no text, text in russian/english, circle under/around the doll).
We'll probably also keep the doll/animal alone.
Update: I didn't see the latest variations on the doll by Marlena. Check it out here (http://www.1000ad.net/marlena/matroskalogos.html).
And here is the doll alone.
