Can the 708A burn 1x media, such as Ritek G03's, at 2x?

My G03's show the option of burning at 2x (using Instant CD/DVD); however, that increases the error rate... I haven't tried other 1x media.

Can you elaborate on 'increases the error rate'? Have you burned G03's at 2x with the 708a?
Are you referring to kprobe scores?

I think c't tested G03s at 1x and 2x (actually... Audiodev does the testing for c't and you can hardly get any more reliable testing than what those guys do) and burning at 2x increased the error rate. There is a reason why those discs are not officially rated 2x.. the material used isn't good enough to get a 2x certification.

Ritek is not even on the list of recommended media at all for that plextor drive, not even for 1x

I understand the media may not be certified or endorsed by the drive maker, but I prefer to make my own decision regarding wether or not I want to burn at a particular speed. Not have the drive force a cap on me.
I've been burning G03's on my Pioneer A04 for almost 2 years now at 2x. I've burned plenty of other media, Princos, Opto's, and others that have more problems at 1x than the G03's do at 2x.
So the point of my question was to find out if the Plextor allows you to burn at whatever speed you want, letting you take your chances. I understand that burning at too high a speed may result in a coaster. I ask this because the A06 will not allow you to burn 1x media at 2x, unless you install a hacked firmware.

@quantum: what you need to understand is that there is no standard for 2x DVD-Rs. There is a standard for 1x and 4x discs, and pretty soon there will be one for 8x. 2x burning is always done on discs that correspond to the standard for 1x discs.. you can consider it as an "over the speed limit burning", much like 8x burning on certain types of 4x DVD+R media with the Plextor burner.. those things are outside of specs. While you can use most technical gadgets outside of their specs, the manufacturers won't guarantee that it works, hence we have lists of recommended media and certification mechanisms to ensure that things work as advertised. I prefer to play it safe rather than being sorry so I stick to officially supported burning speeds.

@quantum: for CD-R media, you can override the speed limit indicated by the burner by disabling PowerRec. However, this does not work for cd-rw media, and I don't know if it has any affect on dvd media
