Hey,
i've read several threads on the subject, but cant seem to get anything to work for me. I have a Memorex dual format dvr+/-r burner. It burns at its rated speed of 4x. If i run a test thru EZ DVD creator, it claims to read at 14X, which is close enough to the rated speed of 16X.

But when i rip using DVD Shrink, it only reads at 2X. Granted, it works fine, but how can i make this thing go faster? I have double checked my IDE settings, and the drive is running in Multi-Word DMA Mode-2. I have tried updating the VIA IDE drivers. It claims to have installed, but if i check the driver for the VIA Master IDE bus, it still shows to be a generic Microsoft driver. Clicking "Update Driver" yields no better driver.

I'm stuck. What more can i do? I saw about a DMAFIX program here, but it seems to not be available anymore, plus, i'm already in DMA mode, so i dont think it'll hekp anyway.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome to the forum mykrob,

It cannot be predicted the ripping can be done at given rated speed. There are some factors involving the speed of ripping.First ur drive's speed ,as several MBs are transferred in 1 second.if u have faster HDD the speed will be better. The other condition is system ram ,during ripping several buffers are used and require some ram.The third condition is the quality of DVD.If it has some scratches,it will take more to rip.

If u tried other ripping programs and got similar results on same DVD ,the problem is on ur DVD disc.Try ripping different DVDs and if the results are same ,the problem can be on ur DVD drive.

hey, thanks for the response..
Kinda hard to swallow that it may be the burner, but its a possibility. The suckers one month old. I have gotten a consistent rip speed of 2 with every commercial DVD i have put in it. Have tried on one thats been ripped/burned, but i presume i will get the same results. My hard drive aint the fastest, its a 54oo RPM. CPU is a 1.7GHz, and i have 300+ MB Ram, i think its like 384 or somewhere around there... I know its not the software, i tried it on my friends HP, and it worked fine.

Is there any way i can be sure what the deal is? Do you know of any benchmarking software so i can get a GOOD test of the drvie itself? Like i said, according the the EZ-DVD 6 test, for large files, it read steadily at 14x.

thanks agian,

Unfortunately many new drives have a limitation of 2x when reading encrypted discs to discourage ripping. If your drive is spot on 2x then it's most likely that you have one of these limited drives. The 16x only refers to reading data discs, as opposed to DVD-video.
