Try changing the file extensions manually to an extension that will be recognized by one of your other players. Running a search on "windvd" or variations thereof may give you some leftovers to delete. And then, there's always the registry to play with....:), but beware if you haven't done work there in the past.

just right click the file, choose "open with", choose the right application and then tick the box on the bottom of the dialog where it says 'always use this program ...'

everything should work then...

alternatively, most media players (e.g PowerDVD, WMP, BSPlayer - iirc) allow you to reassociate those files with the app in their respective options dialog!

PS: of course ammck55 is right, you can also do it in the registry, which would even be the 'cleaner' solution. so if you are comfortable editing the registry - go ahead and do so :)

I used regcleaner and that solved my problem of ifo files being renamed windvd.playback. I right clicked and checked the box so power dvd will always open the ifo files. how can i undo that so the ifo files don't open with any particular application?

I don't know if that's possible, and if it is, such a default would force you to choose a player each time you open one of your files. Wouldn't it be easier to set a default player with which you feel comfortable and know how to manipulate well? Maybe I'm missing your meaning here, but hey, it wouldn't be the first time. :) On the occasion of wanting to open a file in a different player that offers a specific option that you need, well, you're back to the "right click > open with..." that steVe pointed you towards. Congrats on cleaning up the registry to your satisfaction.

i went into control panel/folder options/file types/advanced and was able to remove the comands and even asign a cool dvd icon to the ifo files. I don't need a default setting since i don't need to open them individually, these files get opened by the player as a group ifo, bup, vob, etc.
thanks to everyone for the advice
