On these newer drives should DMA be turned on or off. On the older Pioneer drives, DMA was supposed to be off. I'm just not sure about the newer drives.
PC is running Windows 2000 with P4 1.8Ghz /384MB DDR and 7200 RPM drive.

I'm certain, that you need to use DMA. This are "big" transfers of data. All faster plextor CDRW drives needed DMA-- DVD drives probably too. The only time DMA can be a problem is, when you update firmware(some manufacturers had this warning), but I never had problem updating with DMA enabled. Go right ahead with DMA !

On the older Pioneer drives, DMA was supposed to be off.If the manual indeed said this, the one who wrote it should be forced to eat it :sly:

DMA should be on. It is on mine and I have no problems.

I had a problem with my new plextor using dvd decrypter. I tried the blank disc that comes with the 8 speed burner and I had some illegal errors on decrypter. Tried to burn an iso. It worked with my dvd-r 1 speed disc, but not with the + disc the burner came with. Is there some formatting you have to do with the + media before using it?
I ask this because that free disc doesn't show up anything in read mode on decrypter.

DMA is necesary for DVD drives. If you use PIO you won't be able to read/write faster than 2x .

I am not too sure, but if you plan to make a video DVD, my burner manual says that UDF 2.0 is the most adequate format. Anyway all Video DVDs are UDF, so better do not use ISO. Even for data DVDs, UDF is more adequate, although you may have problems with old OS such as W98, W95 and perhaps Millenium. And please, กกกก DO NOT FORMAT DVD+R !!!!! :scared:

I believe UDF 1.02 is the version used on commercial video dvds. Also, where chipvideo mentioned ISO, he was referring to the image type, not the filesystem ISO9660.
Commercial dvds actually use both filesystems - UDF and ISO9660 - and as you know they work fine!

Another thing I noticed is that I am only getting 2x speed when I rip to the hard drive. I am using dma mode just like with my other computer and I get the same ripping speed? Is this a default in dvd decrypter?

Are you sure you read the plextool manual? There must be one on the bundled disc...

I get 2x speed but only when DMA is disabled. There must be something wrong there.

The speed is set to 2x by default. If you get 2x, then there is nothing wrong, unless you tried to switch the limit off in plextools without having any affect

Ok so then where do I go to set the speed above 2X ripping?

There is a thread over on the cdfreaks forum that tells you how to speed it up for ripping - if thats what you mean?
You have to press the button in for 3 seconds or something until the light starts flashing. Then the next disc you put in will rip quickly. You need to repeat this process for every disc you insert because it resets the speed when the disc is ejected.
Speed is in no way limited within my program. It will rip as fast as your pc will let it.

I have managed to make 3 coasters out of three with the + media on my plextor drive. I can burn any rw + or - , and I can even burn crap dvd-r media. Why in the heck can't i get any dvd+ media to burn? This is frustrating. Another thing I notice is in dvd decrypter when I put a blank + into it in iso mode it doesn't show the full specs of the media. Just shows its a + and a couple other things. Ive done this on both OS. One with everything I use installed on it and the other one is a fresh install with nothing other than dvd decrypter. Using WinXP PRO.

The Plextor drives uses its own command set for dvd+ media identification. ASPI-Spy on the next version of Feurio to find those commands, or maybe lightning UK can get those commands from plextor.

Well I managed to burn a + disc finally. Did it at 8 speed and it was only a 4 speed disc. It was the ritek brand. Only problem is when I put it in my set top dvd player the sony player says the disc is dirty. I know that it plays dvd+rw so why won't it play this one.

ritek is not listed as recommended media for any speed ;) Did you KProbe it? Maybe the write quality is poor, and your dvd player can read dvd+r, but only if written at good quality.

I just now got done doing a dvd+rw at 4 speed and worked great on my set top. Maybe try the burn at 4 speed like they are rated at?
