Hi Everyone,

I would like to ask for some advise.

I starded experimentating with the DVD2SVCD program and after a few times encoding i ended up with several problems and questions as also the too large disks problem with TMPGenc's CQ.

I tried different things to correct this, restarted from mux and cut and re-encoded the movie with settings advised in the forum.
By the time i wanted to try CCE i looked at my old Plextor writer and thought, hmm why not buy this new Plextor 708A "Do-it-All drive"
so i could burn the whole thing on one DVD instead of cutting in 2 cd's...

So now i am the happy owner of the superb 8 speed DVD burner, but i think i better SWITCH to DVD copying techniques instead of burning the highest svcd quality rip to a DVD....

Only there is this problem, ... the DVD's i wanted to process, i ripped them to HDD by using the D2S's batch prepare methode....
So now i am not sure what technique i should use to make DVD's again from these directory's! As i can see some D2S stuff in it, and the IFO-file and VOB-files, but i guess the should be more..!?

When i try to play from directory with the WINDVD program, i receive an error.

So, what shall i do with these batch prepared directory's as we imagine i do not have the DVD's anymore... I have...okay, but an man's gotta learn by doing, so...:D

Thank you all for reading and if u like you can give me your opinion.

bye bye ;)

Congratulations on your Plextor. So you're half way now. You got the equipment, but now have to learn the basics about dvds. This will mean a lot of reading and trying things out. Read the guides that are available on doom9 and visit http://dvdguides.trilight.net also use the wonderfull search button.

I don't know what batch method you're referring to, but if you want to start using 'the big three' method (as I guess you want, since you posted in this forum) it's strongly advised to have the dvd in filemode on your HD. Mount the imgae with deamon tools. But hey this you will read in the guides.

So you'll have to rerip the dvd. Which brings me to an important point: you better make up your mind about still having the original dvd, which is not quite clear from your post. If not you'd be in violation of forum rule #6 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) . For now I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for that.

The message I get an error doesn't give very much info BTW

Good luck.

Thanks for replying on my post.

I will experimentate with the different guides that are around.

I posted in this forum because i want to backup the DVD as efficient and original as possible rather then choose one click methodes that compress the whole DVD.

I imagine backing up the main movie in its original quality including al switchable subs, but compress the audio and remove any other not original audio like synchronisations.

The extras i should compress to an SVCD or as possible on the DVD also, only if they are kinda worth it.

So i am not sure if am in the right forum , although the trilight guide looks good.

I will check out the different methodes but for now i was wondering what to to with these files i ripped so far with the DVD2SVCD program. I ripped (batch perepared the discs to my harddrive to prosess them later by this application. So how do i continue from this point....if it is possible.

In fact my nephew did buy several DVD's in special price last time he was here to visit me. We did see a few but as i wanted to see the rest also, i copied the titles to hardrive so we could both see them at home, making him a deal to make SVCD backups for him... but that wasnt so easy as i thought... though,...very close with DVD2SVCD ;)

In meanwhile, can i do something with the SVCD-ripped files, or do i have to wait till my nephew returns?

Well like I said ripping the dvds in iso mode is highly recommended. It's possible to process files that are ripped in filemode.

It's highly likely though that you will run into trouble and that the answer will be shopuld have dopne it in isomode....

@Ewoud

I have to say I never used D2S batch prepare, but I believe it will work with mdvdauth plugin.

So, I believe you can continue using DVD2DVD new feature of D2S (Scenarist required), or, if it is a PAL DVD you can try mdvdauth.

In any case you will get a "movie only" backup, without menus, extras etc, and this is out of the scope of "Big 3" forum.

yeah... most likely the directory D2S left me is not complete, and i can't check it now since my nephew has the discs and he's not into computers. Otherwise i phoned 'm to check what's actually supposed to be on them....

As i continue to copy DVD's i will use the full rip methodes ofcourse like descriped in the "Das Uberguide" but the advise to switch to the other mode of this D2S program is might maybe the best idea, only the plugins you are talking about, member 'Jsoto' , doesn't say anything yet to me bu t maybe tey come clear when swithing the app to DVD2DVD mode... Do i have to reinstall the app then or can you switch within?

thanks for thinking both.

@Ewoud

AFAIK D2S only rips the main movie, but not the whole discs (it means , all VTS plus VIDEO_TS files). As I said before, I never used batch prepare..

D2S has included DVD2DVD feature in his new release 1.2.1. You have to install it if you want to use this mode, but you can switch between the diferent modes (VCD, SVCD and DVD) each time you run D2S.

mdvdauth plugin has been tested with 1.1.3 and 1.2.1 D2S versions and MUST be used in SVCD mode (although the final image will be a DVD or miniDVD).

Anyway, any question/problem about D2S is better to be done in D2S basic forum.

Cheers

Since i only want to convert these movies i have already copied to my harddrive i better don't start another thread about this in DVD2SVCD Forum i think, the only i need to know is the following when experimentating with DVD2DVD mode;

The Sonic Scenarist app, is it available for Win9x, ME or just for 2000, XP? I downloaded a trial, but only seems to install on NT.

And what is this plugin you talkin about, what doies it do, how do u use it, and where to get it?

Something else.......

I think I leave the SVCD thing behind and start with DVD mode backuping, since i bought the new Plextor writer....
For now, after some tests, i think i'll be using DVDshrink, it's a free application and very promising and quickly updated everytime.
In this app you can re-author your whole DVD in a drag and drop window. Also you can set different cut and compression points in one seamless videostream!

Only when you completely reauthour your disc, you will loose the origianl menus of the disc, so i came up with another idea to replace
different parts of the DVD with dummies so you can Backup the main movie an extras aprt on Discs and still keep the original menusystem by the title. You copy the mainmovie and for all extras selected in the menu you replace the content with a message "insert disc 2"
On the 2nd disc you do the same for the mainmovie when selected and replace the content with a message saying "insert disc 1"
Or you could also make an message "this section has been removed"

Only how can you do this? Would it be an option to open a VOBfile and remove the content with dummies?

plugin:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45504
Please note it is only a script. It uses IfoEdit for authoring.

Scenarist: Sorry, I do not own a copy af this SW, I cannot help you.

About "Something else..."
I recommend you to do some reading in "DVD and miniDVD" forums. Start from stickies and you will find many answers as well as very good guides for the questions you are asking.
