DVD Shrink error help!

When analizing initially in DVD Shrink 2.3 and when encoding in 3 Beta5 I get an error message that reads:

DVD Shrink Encountered an error and cannot continue this operation.

CDvdCSS::Read Failed!

The reason is: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Before you curse me off for being a total idiot, I would like to point out that this DVD is not encrypted and so based on what I have read in similar problematic posts, that makes this a little unique.

I've tried Decrypter first, smart ripper, and checking my DVD players region settings. None of that worked.

I've tried to ripp it seperately in chucks w/the problematic part missing, but that proved to be a hard task and when I finally got it just right, the software would not recognize it as a complete valid chuncks.
No matter what I do I find problem and for the first time in a long time I think I'm going to just give up.

So....being that I'm at the breaking point, any related information anyone has is really appreciated and I thank you for it.

Did you use DVD Decrypter 3.1.6.0 in file mode before using DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5? Are you re-authoring or full disk copy?

I noticed that there were a lot of people getting this error when using v2.3 so you're not the only one. Between the two, you're better off with 3.0 even though it's a beta.

This normally indicates the DVD is physically damage and cannot be read properly in its entirety. :(

I'd suggest you try and use a "CD/DVD repair kit", or, and I hope it isn't against forums rules, borrow or rent the DVD to make your backup.
(I wouldn't think this would be illegal as you already own an original)
One another thing that might be worth a try is ripping the DVD with your DVD burner (as it might be better at handling errors).

I get the same error with one of my dvds im trying to back up.
im using shrink 2.3 also. there isnt anything wrong with the dvd as it plays fine on both players.
ive tried smart ripper/dvd decrypter/dvdxcopy and all stop on the 3rd vob file. ive tagged "ignore sectors" etc and nothing does it.ive tried main movie only , full disk/iso etc.
i think all that is left is to capture it unless someone has a bright idea i havent thought of yet. there are no scratches on the dvd as i am carefull with mine.
SO..... any ideas?

Actually, odd though it may seem, a disk can be damaged and still play fine in a stand-alone player. MPG playback is forgiving of stream errors and stand-alone players are built to take advantage of it. After all, a player's only responsibility is to play DVDs.

DVD-ROM drives don't have that luxury. They're built to read data, and to them a movie DVD is just like any other DVD data disk. A minor flaw on the disk will stop them dead in their tracks.

The only thing I can recommend is:
- try the disk in a different DVD-ROM drive (that sometimes works for me, though rarely)
- try a different copy of the original (return it, swap your's with a friend, whatever)

already tried both venues.(my paid for dvd)
same thing, wont read vob 3 or copy on another dvd player and a rented copy of the same movie has the same deal, so im thinking its a protection scheme. that kinda sucks!! i can always do a capture but then i miss the motion menu.
oh well, ill keep looking for an answer. if anybody finds a trick around this, please let us know.

What's the title of this dvd and what region is it?

It isn't really possible to have a new protection scheme. There are too many millions of existing DVD players that the DVD has to be compatible with.

Is VOB 3 really tiny? It seems some ripping engines (like Smart Ripper) have a problem with really small (like 80 KB) VOB files. I think the brute force cracking routines fail if there isn't enough data to support the key finding algorythm.

It didn't occur to me you might be using using DVDShrink's internal ripping routines (in other words, shrinking directly from the DVD) because I never do that.

If that's what you have been doing, try ripping the DVD to an ISO image with DVDDecrypter. If that works, you can then mount the image with daemon tools and run DVDShrink on the mounted image (and sorry about the wasted rental).

On the other hand, if DVDDecrypter reports an error, you can post a question into the Decrypting forum and maybe someone can shed light on what's going on with the disk.
