I have a movie (AVI) file that's over 700 MB. When I try to convert to VCD it becomes to big to fit onto 1 CD. What can I do ? Why are some AVI files so big (>700 MB) and then there are some movies that are split into 2 files of about 150 MB each ? One of my AVI movie has no sound when I play through Windows Media Player. Any ideas why ?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum manoman,

I hope u want to convert AVI to VCD.This is a transcoding process as MPEG-4 is converted to MPEG-1.The former has a better compression and require less space. And for a VCD the possible capacity is about 74min in 650MBCD due to MPEG-1 encoding. Thus u cannot convert the complete Avi greater than this time to single VCD.

On the other way, if u r trying to burn largesized(>700MB) AVI to a single dataCD,there is a possibility of overburning the disk.By which u can burn 800MB into 700MB disc.
Try searching overburning.

One of my AVI movie has no sound when I play through Windows Media Player. Any ideas why ?

This is bcoz u may haven't installed the direct show (ds) filter. For a particular audio format other than mp3 u require respective DS filter to be installed to hear sound from movie.

Well it's not the size of the AVI that matters, really it's how long the movie is. VCD/MPEG1 is about 10MB per Minute. So your regular 700MB CD's can hold 80Min of Video burned as MPEG1. 10MB x 80Min = 800MB which is how much a CD can hold in Mode2. Regular data CD's are burned in MODE1 and only hold 700MB, mode2 uses less error correction which is fine for movies and audio cuase they have that built in and so they can use all 800MB available on the CD.

If you want to burn the AVI file, and it's to big for overburning, you might try using XCD. It's still in development, but it's worked great for many users.

You didn't mention what tool set you are using. Several will create multiple VCDs from a long AVI, such as DVD2SVCD. But if you are using Nero, for example, it's quite limited as an encoder, and that may be why you are asking how to manage it.

VCDs have a fixed bitrate for both MP2 audio and MPEG-1 video, and are designed to be played at 1X speed. So an 80min disc will hold exactly 80 minutes, a 74min disc will hold 74 minutes.

Doom9 has an excellent AVI->SVCD step by step guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm) using DVD2SVCD; to go to VCD instead of SVCD, merely press the "Load Settings" button on the Misc tab and load the VCD-Settings.ini file.
